‘Luring Your Rapebait’ Email Incites Controversy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNL chapter.

Parties are a major part of the college experience, especially frat parties featuring loud music, alcohol, a multitude of girls, and of course, frat guys. Earlier this week at The Georgia Institute of Technology, commonly known as Georgia Tech, an email from a fraternity member in Phi Kappa Tau came into the light of the media.

The email was to the rest of the fraternity members, explaining how to “get lucky” at parties. One piece of advice given to the frat brothers was the following:

“Always use your hands or arms to guide their dancing in order to maximize your pleasure. You can make-out with her (tongue on tongue), you can stick your hand up her shirt (not right away though), you can go for a butt grab (outside or inside the shirts), use your imagination. Always start out with the making out!!!! No Raping. If anything ever fails, go get more alcohol.”

He signed the letter, “in luring rape bait.”

A few days after the letter was publicly revealed, the author of the letter apologized, saying, “I am deeply sorry for the pain and embarrassment my actions and lack of judgment have caused the students at Georgia Tech and my Phi Kappa Tau brotherhood as well as those who otherwise came into contact with the email.”

There is an investigation taking place regarding the email and the student who wrote the email has been suspended. Phi Kappa Tau’s national office released a statement concluding that the email is, “extremely inappropriate and does not reflect the values of the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity.”

The complete email can be read here.
