10 Tips for Healthier Hair

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNI chapter.

Have you ever noticed how Cedar Falls water isn’t exactly the best for your hair? Something about the water tends to make my hair have a straw like texture and completely drain the color. The fact that it’s the middle of September and still close to 90 degrees some days isn’t helping the cause either. I’ve come up with 10 easy ways to strengthen and protect your beautiful luscious hair!

1. Brush your hair before entering the shower. It will help remove product build-up such as hair spray or mouse. It also gets your blood flow moving!

2. Don’t shampoo every day. According to Marie Claire, too much shampooing can dry your scalp and actually do more harm than good.

3. Try to air dry your hair as much as possible. Using a cheap blow dryer can put your hair through misery if not properly protected. Apply heat protectors before blow drying. For only $5, Pantene Heat Protection can help shield and enhance shine.

4. Don’t be a pony. Try letting your hair down as much as possible. According to Mayo Clinic, unwanted hair loss could be due to excessive pulling or constraining.

5. Try using color enhancing shampoos and conditioners. Redken Blonde Glam is a great product for blondes that will have you taking fewer trips to the salon.

6. Eat Healthy. Healthy eating is directly related to healthy hair, according to Marie Claire. Fish or anything rich in omega-3 fatty acids will help intensify the health of your roots.

7. Try not to color yourself. Out of the box coloring treatments are very damaging and strip your hair. Try going to a beauty school, they typically have cheaper prices.

8. Trim your hair on a regular basis. It will make your hair look fresh.

9. Try to deep condition every 2 weeks. Deep conditioning revitalizes hair and makes it soft again.

10. Don’t be a tease. Let’s be real, we all like to have a little poof every now and then, but don’t tease your hair every day. Teasing everyday could cause damage to your roots.

Lottie is a junior at the University of Northern Iowa and she is a communications major with a journalism minor. She has always had a passion for fashion and writing, so she figured, why not combine them? She was a writer for Her Campus only one semester before becoming the Editor-in-chief and campus correspondent for fall of 2011. Lottie is very excited to take on the challenge and to make great things happen with Her Campus magazine.
