As we head into another week of classes, many students around campus are starting to prepare for their FIRST exams of the semester.  Also common around this time of the semester are FIRST papers that are due and group projects. Here are some helpful tips to make your FIRST examinations less stressful and more successful!

  • Start Early: If you know your exam is one week away, start reviewing the material ASAP! This will prevent cramming and will allow you to spend more time going over material that you are unsure of.  Starting early also gives you the opportunity to ask your professor for clarification on confusing information.
  • Find a good study spot: Find a place where you feel comfortable and where there is good lighting. This place should be quiet and have good lighting. Try to avoid studying in your bed because it is so easy to lie down and take a nap.
  • Take short breaks frequently: Studies show studying for more than 2 hours at a time proves to be unsuccessful. If you take a short five to ten minute break, your brain retains more information at the beginning and end of your study sessions rather than in the middle.
  • Test yourself: Going over old quizzes and testing yourself on the questions at the end of the book will show whether or not you really understand the information you are trying to study.
  • Plan the length of your study session: Plan the length of your study session by the amount of material you have to study instead of the clock. Often times it takes you longer to understand the material than you think.

Good luck taking during your FIRST major examination week, hopefully these study tips will help you do well!

Want to know what is up with FIRST being stressed so much in this article? Her Campus has teamed up with a national campaign called “She’s the First” to fundraise for sponsorships for girls in India, Nepal, Guatemala, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Sudan.  Students and young professionals from all over the country will be baking and selling tie-dye cupcakes during the first week of November to help raise money in order to change lives! By mentioning a “FIRST” each week on the HER CAMPUS blog, we hope to raise awareness so people will come out and support this great cause!
