Make the Most of Winter Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Winter break is almost upon us! We just have to get through finals and we’re free. Whether your staying on campus for break or going home, there is so much to do. I know that winter break is all fun and games at first but after the first few weeks it seems as though mom and dad are more annoying then ever and your itching to get pack to the U to play with your friends. Here’s a list of things to do over break that I know will come in handy!

For those of us who are babies and hate the cold (look out the window and if its snowing immediately go back to bed) we’ve got you covered.

  • First things first, sleep all day for a few days straight. College takes a toll on us and we NEED our beauty sleep.

  • Clean your closet

As fun as this does not sound, your wardrobe could use a little TLC. We all have clothes we keep forever saying “oh, I may wear it one day” well its 4 years later and you still haven’t worn it so get rid of it! It is the season for giving so why not do a good deed and donate to local Salvation Army. And who knows, Santa may be bringing you a bunch of new clothes and you need to make room!

  • Start a Knitting Project

I know we are all little crafters at heart, I mean we are girls we naturally have it in us. Pick up a pair of knitting needles and yarn next time your out and start a knitting project. Make your own infinity scarfs or give them as gifts!

  • Go to the gym!

What else are you going to do everyday? Take an hour every day and be active! If it’s not too chilly/snowy go for a run, maybe lap the mall a few times, or go get a gym membership. Spring break is coming up, getting in the routine now will be a fresh start for when you come back next semester and seeing a change will defineityl be worth it!

  • Movie marathon

Invite over your best friends, bring every pillow and blanket you can find and plop down in front of the TV. Watching movies all day long with your best girl friends is the perfect solution to these winter blues! Maybe even pop open a bottle of wine or throw some peppermint schnapps in your hot cocoa.

  • Make a ginger bread house

Get festive, it’s a great way to bring the family together for the holidays. Be romantic and make one with your significant other or have a little bonding time with your sibling. Eating all the left over candy at the end is the best part.

  • Go shopping

This one is a no brainer. Spice up your wardrobe and go for looks you normally wouldn’t. Time to step out of your comfort zone and get your closet ready for next semester. Pick out the perfect outfit for Christmas and New Years! And I guess maybe doing some Christmas shopping for your friends and family would be a good idea as well! Buy cute clothes for your best friends at school, so when you go back you can borrow them.

  • Warm up with a cold beer

Take a trip to the Red Hook Brewery in Portsmouth and tour their brewery. Stop in the dining room or at the bar after your tour for a delicious dinner. This is a perfect winter date!

  • Share the love

This is a season of giving and most of us may be very blessed and grateful for what we have, but why not share that feeling with others. If you have some free time volunteer somewhere in your community whether it be at a church or a community event. Even donate a few cans to a local food pantry. Every little bit helps!

For those more daring and love the winter here are activities you must do at least once over break!

  • Go sledding at Wagon Hill
  • Go skiing or snowboarding at one of the many slopes in the area. Sugarloaf and Sunday River have great college deals!

  • Go ice-skating! If you’re in this area Rochester, Exeter and Dover all have rinks open to the public!

  • The obvious ones… build a snowman, make a snow angel and have a snowball fight.

  • Trip to Boston

Plan a trip with friends, maybe even school friends you don’t get to see while your home. Boston is the perfect place to meet up and roam the streets to see all the Christmas decorations. After you can grab a nice dinner and then hit the bars.

  • Day trip to Portsmouth

Take a trip to Portsmouth if you’re in the area and enjoy everything the city has to offer. Take a ride on the Portsmouth Vintage Christmas Trolley. It stops all downtown, even at Strawbery Banke where you can take part in the annual candlelight stroll.  Afterwards you can all get dinner somewhere downtown.

All these ideas will surely keep you busy while you are away from UNH, so good luck with finals and enjoy your winter break!
