How To Stay Fit This September

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

The beginning of school is always filled with seeing friends, enjoying the weather, and getting used to being in class again after a summer filled with relaxing beach days and fun summer nights. So the thought of spending an hour each day in a crowded hot gym with 100 other classmates doesn’t really seem like a fun way to get into shape this summer. The good news is – there are so many different ways to stay active at UNH without heading into the Whit. Here are just a few.

If you haven’t seen College Woods yet, this is a great activity to get some exercise while enjoying the fall weather. Hop on you’re bike, lace up your running shoes, or just go for a walk through the woods. You shouldn’t leave UNH this year without getting lost in College Woods at least once.

Campus is plenty big enough that just going for a walk around can be a good workout. When you’re not in the mood for a strenuous workout session, take a walk around. If you’re feeling ambitious, walk up the library hill a few times, that’s enough of a workout as it is!

The track isn’t just for the track and field team – just like the tennis courts aren’t just for tennis club. Run some sprints at the track or play around on the tennis court. You don’t have to be a pro to torch calories.

Get an Indoor Pool sticker from Campus Rec and make use of our Olympic size swimming pool in the Field House. Seeing how in shape all those Olympic swimmers were this summer should be reason enough! If swimming isn’t your strong suit there are also water fitness classes – it’s never to early to get started on your spring break body with Bikini Boot camp.

Check out the new Yoga boutique, 3 Bridges Yoga, downtown or sign up for one of the paid Yoga and Pilates classes at the gym – less crowded and you’ll feel committed to go if you spent money on it.

Take advantage of the huge variety of clubs and groups UNH has to offer. If you’re really interested in a particular sport – check out Campus Recreations list of club teams to try out for.

If you’re not that serious and just want to have a little fun – get some of your friends together to join an intramural team. Soccer, football and water polo in tubes… with so many options you’ll be sure to find one you’re interested in.

Join the outdoor adventures club. They offer tons of outdoor activities and adventures like rock climbing and wilderness trips – and no experience is required!

No excuses!
Don’t use the gym being to crowd as an excuse to skip your workout. Utilize these other options and you’ll find yourself enjoying workout out more – and being more productive on those days when you do decide to head to the gym.
