Cheap and Easy Halloween Costumes Found in your Apartment

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

I know what you’re thinking. It’s that time of year again. All symptoms are proving to be true: the leaves have changed, girlfriends have coerced their boyfriends into the cute apple picking candids for that adorable Instagram, and just about anything you could ever imagine can be ordered in pumpkin flavor.. Its fall!  As the climax of fall, October encompasses some of the best events of the year. Another successful homecoming in the books, you spent those three days (but felt like years) with your families over “parents weekend”, and somehow in the midst of it all, you were a rockstar and crushed a midterm or two. To top off the excitement, one of the biggest weekends of the year squeezes its way in the chaos, Halloween! Every year October seems to fly by faster and faster, and suddenly you wake up with Halloween days away and the closest thing you have to a costume is that terrible sweater you brought to school just to spare your mother’s feelings.  Here in college world we must follow some sort of different calendar than the rest of the world. Most people would say Halloween is October 31st but somewhere down the road it went from being just one night to three. As if planning that perfect costume isn’t hard enough as is, costumes are always either one of two things: expensive or never worn again. Its college. I don’t know about you, but bringing myself to spend $50.00 to impersonate a minion for a night isn’t quite calculated into my budget (even though they’re cute). Luckily, we’re all in this together. Here are ten costume ideas that can be made from things lying around your apartment that are both easy and affordable!

1. Athlete: Have an old Patriots or Bruins jersey lying around? Or an old redsox hat and baseball tee? Ask a guy friend to borrow his football and throw on some knee-high socks and bam! Suddenly Tom Brady is enrolled at UNH.

2. Lumberjack: Lets be honest. Its New England, theres nearly a 100% chance either you or one of your roommates owns a flannel. Grab the flannel, a pair of jean shorts, beanie, and some suspenders and you’ll be golden (and warm).

3.  Deer: All brown clothes and two sticks found out in college woods could transform you into Bambi for the night. A tail out of cotton balls and makeup drawn on perfect this adorable look.

4. Tourist: You know those random khaki shorts lying in the bottom of your drawer that you never have and probably never will wear? Bring ‘em out! A simple button up, sunglasses, and bucket hat or visor will complete this easy look. And if you have any lei’s or maps lying around people will be itching to hear about your vacation!

5. HOBO: Most likely the easiest to put together, rough up some leggings or old jeans, throw some dirt on your face, and craft that perfect sign to depict your story. Don’t forget a can to collect your generous donations!

6. Salt and Pepper: This is an easy and fun one to do with a friend. One person in all black, the other in all white, and some duck tape to denote the letter of your seasoning. If you’e feeling really festive, the top of your shaker could easily be made out of tin foil!

7. White Trash: This one is pretty self explanatory.. Grab a white trash bag from under your sink and explain no further. Easy, witty, and spill-resistant to any weekend beverages you may encounter.

8. Doll: Any dress or skirt can make this costume work while knee high socks and heels are the icing on the cake! Also, don’t forget the makeup. Whiting out your face and painting on those doll-like features will perfect the look!

9.  Easy A: I’m slightly biased with a love for Emma Stone, but any girl has the potential to look like the beauty herself with an all black outfit and little tiny red “A” placed on the chest. Easy right?

10. Frat Bro: We all know one. Or at least, we’ve definitely all seen one at this school, thats for sure. A baggy shirt, khakis, boat shoes, and some shades will get you a bid this Halloween, no doubt!
