Advice From an OPI Nail Polish

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

In today’s world we’re used to being bombarded with advice: advice from our parents, advice from our professors, advice from the girl behind you in the bathroom line at Libby’s Friday night. But what about getting advice from a bottle of OPI nail polish? When I went in to get my pick-me-up pedicure I was drawn to this bright sparkly pink. I was hesitant to pick it up, I wanted something dark and dreary to match the weather and the way I was feeling. I paused over every black, grey, and deep red, but none of them were doing it for me. Could I give in to this sparkly, pretty pink?

This was before spring break, and I thought I should force myself to go with something that wouldn’t make my ghostly white skin look so pale (I am working on no more tanning…). There I went. I just did it. I grabbed the crazy pink color that caught my eye right when I walked in. Per usual, I flipped the bottle right over and quickly read the funny little name that OPI is famous for. “Wing It.” Really? I suddenly realized that was the kick in the butt I needed. This is the kick in the butt a lot of us need.

Now what does “winging it” mean? No, I am sorry to say this does not mean you blow off study for your huge law exam. I wont be blamed for encouraging students to boycott the library. Winging it means you need a little spontaneity in your life. It means it’s time to break out of the mundane rut that must of us put ourselves in during the winter. Seriously though, I’m challenging you to do something way out of character and way out of your comfort zone!

If going to Scorps on a Wednesday for Trivia Night is on your bucket list, then stop waiting around, grab your girls and go! Do something you have never done, or something you haven’t done in a long time. When was the last time you hopped in the car and went on an unexpected road trip? When was the last time you decided to take a spur of the moment weekend trip to NYC with your best friend? When was the last time you and your sweetheart were bored and decided to go sledding for the day? Those fun spontaneous things are the memories that last. Spur of the moment trips have no expectations and are usually the best times. Don’t be boring, do something!

Take a baby step back and reassess your life. Are you stressed? Maybe you are graduating and feeling the pressures of life sinking in? Recent break-up? Whatever your stressor is, realize that all of these things are just a little blip in the big picture of life. As far as I am concerned, destiny and fate will take care of the big things.  We all have our own customized life plan… we just don’t exactly know what it is, so sometimes you just have to WING IT

It is time for us to realize the bigger picture. Yes, things may seem stressful and winter-dreary right now, but in reality, six months from now you will either look back and laugh, or you won’t even remember it. Sometimes you really need to look at your problems from an outsider’s point of view and from a futuristic point of view. After you have learned to not sweat the small stuff, get out there and have some fun! Seriously! You don’t always need set plans; go get lost somewhere and take whatever comes your way. Chances are you’re going to meet some awesome people along the way and have a great time doing it! And while you’re at it, go get a manicure or pedicure, who knows what advice your OPI bottle will give. Enjoy the new spontaneous you!
