POV: you’re hitting that mid-semester burnout and just really want to go home, but can’t. This could be for a number of reasons, like being too busy or living too far away, both of which apply to me. As a senior, I have learned a few tips I wanted to share about dealing with homesickness when you can’t actually make it home.

  1. Re-create your house smell. Does your family have a favorite candle? Do you personally have a favorite candle in your bedroom at home? See if you can find it at the store or online, I promise the smell will bring back happy memories of home!
  2. Decor. Are your parents the ones who get seasonal or holiday decor? Browse online or in store for some of those replicas to make your own room at school feel a little more like home.
  3. Re-create a favorite meal. Everyone has that one special meal that reminds them of home. Whether it is a home-cooked meal (dining hall or as close as you can get if you don’t have a kitchen) or take-out from a restaurant, food can be a happy reminder of home.
  4. Call your family members! Personally, I always feel better after I FaceTime my family and get updates on what is happening at home. This isn’t for everyone, but feeling up-to-date can help make you feel like you’re there, even if it is just a little bit.
Hi:) I'm a junior at the University of New Hampshire majoring in Communication and minoring in Business Administration! Aside from writing for HerCampus, I am usually either doing homework or going to the gym. But, when I have a free second I love hanging out with friends, scrolling through Pinterest, or getting outside and going running or hiking! :)
