Meet Becki Fernandez, President of the Feminist Student Alliance and this week’s Campus Celeb!

HC: What organizations are you involved in on campus?

BF: I’m the President of the Feminist Student Alliance. I dabble with Pride and College Dems.

HC: What made you join these organizations?

BF: Out of interest. I joined the Feminist Student Alliance back when it was the Women’s Studies Student Association and saw an opportunity to grow the organization into a club that caters to and engages with more of the campus community.

HC: What is your favorite thing about each organization?

BF: I love what the FSA has become. More students (and even occasionally faculty and staff!) from different areas and groups on campus come to meetings to support our cause than ever before. Our programs and events are engaging and successful and it’s good to know so many people in the campus community care about what we do. My favorite thing about Pride is how important they are to so many LGBTQIA+ students on campus who feel like their families, schools, and even the nation does not want them. That sense of community is vital and I commend them for the important work they do and resources they provide.

HC: What are your responsibilities as the FSA president?

BF: My responsibilities include leading meetings, organizing volunteers for events, reaching out to other relevant departments and organizations when planning events, implementing feminist programming and dialogue opportunities, responding to any and all inquiries regarding our work as a student organization, and working together with other groups on campus when they reach out to me.

HC: What are some ways that you are collaborating/creating unity with other organizations?

BF: I am constantly trying to bring in and work together with other student organizations in everything that I do with FSA. I’ve recently been reaching out to Pride, Muslim Student Association, Black Student Union, and other organizations on working together on possible projects since many members of these groups have felt targeted as of late. It is important for us to work together when we have intersecting interests.

HC: What is something that you want students to know about FSA?

BF: FSA is deeply committed to equality and advocacy for all, not just women, and if that interests you then join!
