10 Ways to Avoid Laziness and Boredom During the Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCG chapter.

Of course when we think of the summer, everybody starts to think that it’s time to catch up on sleep, relax, and go to the beach. But on those days that you start to say, “I’m bored,” or “I should probably be doing something productive with my life,” here’s a list of things that you can do to stay ahead of the game.

1. Get a summer job

What kind of college student wants to be broke during the summer? If your parents do not supply the cash then you’ll have to come up with your own way to make money. You might even be able to save up and pay off some of that future college debt.

2. Take summer classes

It’s time to get ahead of the game and catch up on those credit hours. Maybe you don’t have as many hours as you wanted because you dropped that 500 level course or you just want to graduate early, either way, taking a couple summer courses will only benefit you in the end.3

3. Get an internship

As a college student, boosting your resume is essential.  An internship is just one more thing you can add to your resume that will definitely catch an employer’s eye.

4. Take a Road trip to someplace you’ve never been before

Who doesn’t like a good old fashioned road trip? Whether you do it with family, friends, or by yourself, get in the car and go.

5. Read some books

It’s always nice to relax, pick up a book, and get some reading done. You might learn something new or maybe you’ll get reaquainted with your favorite fictional characters.

6. Learn a useful skill

Try something fun and new just because you want to try it. Learn a new instrument, play a sport, do something unique that others cannot or do not do. Who knows, maybe this new skill can be added to your resume.

7. Complete some volunteer work

It might sound cliché but doing some volunteer work can bring about some life changing experiences. You might learn a new talent, meet great new friends, or at the very least ease some of that boredem.  (This can also be added to your resume!!)

8. Do something new with your hair or your appearance

Go a little crazy over the summer. Do something different with your life. Always remember, change is good. When you go back to school in the fall everybody will look at you with admiration because you were bold enough to do something out of the ordinary.

9. Hangout with some friends

You might decide to hang out with some friends from school to catch up and talk about how your summer is going so far. Or you might hang out with the friends from home who you haven’t seen since you went away to school. Either way don’t forget to socialize and take the time to enjoy the friendships you have.

10. Spend some time with family

Your family probably hasn’t spent more than a weekend with you since you went away to school. It’s time to fight with siblings, have a family dinner or go to a family function. Sure they might get on your nerves, but you know you missed them and you’ll be gone in the fall again anyway.
