Five Ways to Get in the Spooky Season Spirit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UMKC chapter.

It’s that time of year again, when the temperature starts dropping, the leaves start falling and Starbucks starts serving pumpkin spice lattes again. It’s the start of (basically) every girl’s favorite season, and with that comes one of the greatest holidays: Halloween! There are so many ways that you can get into the spooky season spirit and celebrate all month long instead of just on Halloween. There’s no way you can fit all the fun into a single day of the year anyway.

Host a Pumpkin Carving Party

Not only is carving pumpkins a great way to get into the spirit, but you can also make a whole day out of it. Grab your girlfriends and head over to any pumpkin patch. It’s a chance to take great Instagram pictures, drink some apple cider and pick out a pumpkin. Then, once you’re back home, you can go about carving your pumpkins! In past years, my friends and I have held competitions where we work in pairs to carve a pumpkin. Then, we each vote on whose we think is the best. Plus, if your friends are artsy, you could pick a theme for the carvings so that all your pumpkins match.

 Have a scary movie marathon

This one’s always fun because there are some movies that no matter how many times I see them, they always give me the chills. The great thing about this one is that you can make it a sleepover. No one’s going to sleep after watching those scary movies anyway. If you and your friends are the type of people that don’t get scared easily, you can all sit and laugh about how almost every horror movie is the same. My friends and I even assign each other characters and argue about who would die first if they were in a horror movie.

Go to horror-themed activities

There’s no better way to bond with your friends than seeing how they would react in scary situations. Activities like haunted houses/haunted hikes, hayrides, etc are fun to do because you’ll be talking about them for weeks afterward. They’re so thrilling and if you’re an adrenaline junkie, this is the one time of year where you can get that rush from haunted houses and get into the spooky spirit simultaneously.

Host a bonfire and tell scary stories

Who doesn’t like eating s’mores and sitting around a warm bonfire on a chilly night with your besties? Now, take that experience and add scary stories into the mix for the perfect get together that’ll leave everyone feeling more spooked than before. This is an easy event to plan and you get to enjoy the crisp fall air all at the same time. Maybe scary stories aren’t your thing, though. You can still enjoy the fall weather and share other stories, or reminisce on past memories you and your besties have made together.

Pumpkin EVERYTHING

It may as well be called Pumpkin season instead of Autumn because this is the time of year where every café, coffee shop and grocery store in the country is taking advantage of their seasonal pastries and beverages. Pumpkin is literally everywhere, and we’re even more tempted to buy it because we know that it won’t last forever and we want to experience it while it while we can. My advice would be to get your fix now because you’re going to have to wait a year before pumpkin-flavored-everything returns.

Fall is the greatest season, hands down. No debate needed. The spooky season only makes it that much better. So, go out and enjoy this time while you can. I recommend going out and making the most of this time. It’s probably the only time of year you’ll have such easy access to anything pumpkin flavored, and there are so many activities to enjoy with your friends that you can’t any during any other time of year.
