I wrote a sonnet — more like an attempt at one — and thought I could share it with you all. This year, I had to take Shakespeare as a Creative Writing major. We were asked to write a sonnet and I challenged myself to write with a nature description and of course about love, in honor of Shakespeare. It also hit two birds with one stone as it was a perfect gift for Valentine’s Day and Galentine’s Day! I hope you all enjoy my attempt.

Maiden of Beauty

Eyes as dark as the trees in winter

Heart as pure and soft as fresh fallen snow

Dress blushed scarlet — my heart yearns to win her

Oh to drink springtime wine in the meadow

To have her ruby rouge lips caress mine

It was once just a wish, a dream, a want

But alas it is now finally time

As she is now more than a confidant

Tonight she lay sweetly upon my chest

For every breath I breathe air she receives

There is no better place than this to rest

Her fingers twirl sunflowers as she weaves

Forever I’ll love her body and soul

Wither we may, but our love — never old.

I hope you all enjoyed that attempt. This assignment really has me looking at nature more and I find myself writing more poetry again. We are in a really trying time with the current pandemic and I found writing some poetry incredibly soothing. I recommend you all try writing poems. It’s an excellent way to grow words, learn meanings in a fun way as well as get rid of boredom while we are stuck inside. Happy writing!
