Girls on the Run Central Kentucky Host’s Lexington’s First Silent Disco

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

Lexington is gearing up to dance the night away with its first ever Silent Disco.

This dance party for all ages allows guests to get their groove on, but with a twist. Silent Discos are a unique way to dance to the beat because listeners wear a headphone set while dancing. The headphones allow attendees to listen to the music, but they can also have a conversation without having to yell over the music.

We researched a lot of concepts that would be new to Lexington. This was an idea that we thought would reach kids as well as adults,” said Executive Director Heidi Guckenberger. “We also thought it would be great for individuals with sensory issues. It allows participants to experience a dance party but still be able to hold a conversation.”

The Silent Disco will feature three DJs who will play a variety of music: Today’s Hits, Throwbacks and Hip Hop/R&B/Latin. But dancing is not the only opportunity for guests. Numerous food choices and even a donut wall will be provided at the event. Along with food, Artplay will host a craft room and there will be a photo booth to capture pictures from the night.

This event is not only just for kids. Guests can also partake in a silent auction and West 6th is sponsoring an adult lounge as well.

The Silent Disco is just one of many events leading up to the final event of the years: the end-of-season 5K. Girls on the Run is a program that integrates running into a program that teaches young girls how to be confident, healthy and kind. Girls learn that they can do anything and be anything they want in life.

“This has been a record season for GOTR. We have 863 girls registered for this fall and we now serve 20 counties,” said Guckenberger.

Girls on the Run Central Kentucky is hosting this event with the goal of raising enough money to sponsor four new teams for the spring season in 2019. The dancing will commence on Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. at The Mane on Main.

In addition to the Silent Disco, GOTRCKY is hosting two events the following day. At 10 a.m. a there is a silent yoga event at the Lyric and then a Glow Party that evening at Hugo’s Ultralounge. Both of these events are Saturday, Nov. 10.
