Career Counselors: They Are Here to Help

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

Is picking a major stressing you out? Not sure what career path is right for you? Making decisions regarding your future causing awful anxiety?

If you feel this way, you are not alone. Many other students, new and returning, struggle with choosing a major or potential career path that they feel with satisfy them. In fact, the majority of students switch their major at least once throughout their college career.

However, many of these students struggle alone, forgoing the resources available to them meant to help. These resources can come in the form of a career counselor – someone who is literally there to help students figure out careers and majors that align with their interests.

Talking to a career counselor has personally helped me so much. Between talking through my career-related worries, taking personal assessments regarding my interests and skills and exploring available majors and careers, the career counselor I have been working with has helped me feel more comfortable in choosing a major and career right for me.

Talking to someone who has no prior knowledge of “who you are” allows for a clean slate when talking about your ambitions, interests and future goals. It is completely different than talking with a family member or a lifelong friend.

Anyone who is struggling with decisions regarding the future should seek out assistance through the resources offered at their respective schools. These decisions are not easy ones to make. It is even harder when you are making them completely alone.

It can be beneficial to talk it out with someone, go through all the possibilities, and narrow down your options. This can make the decision process much less daunting and help you feel comfortable and satisfied in the decision you make.
