Ten Reasons Why You Need To Go See A Star is Born!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

A Star is Born is a film about an established musician, Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper), who falls in love with a struggling artist, Ally Campana, (Lady Gaga) and helps her achieve fame even as his struggle with alcoholism sends his own career into a downward spiral. I am going to be honest, I bought a ticket to this movie because I just love Gaga. However, I am so happy and grateful that I saw this film! It made me laugh and also made me sob, uncontrollably. Those are two characteristics that I definitely look for in a movie and a possible Academy Award winner for Best Picture! However, if those two things aren’t enough for you to want to see A Star is Born, here are ten other reasons you should go buy a ticket now.

  1. It has an amazing soundtrack!

-The incredible soundtrack debuted at Number 1 on Billboard 200 Album Chart. And with lyrics like “The part of me that’s you will never die” and Lady Gaga’s rendition of “La Vie en Rose”, it’s no wonder why it has been so successful.

  2. There is talk that it might win the Academy Award for Best Picture at the Oscars!

-Mark Hughes, a writer for Forbes, and a film critic states, “It’s not just that (the film) is competent or even just well-made, rather it has a complexity and subtlety of choices and vision that build upon one another to make this the instant front-runner for Best Picture”. He also said that it is one of the first big movie releases aiming for many Oscar nominations and the media buzz surrounding it indicate it has a strong chance of winning a lot of awards, maybe even the Academy Award for Best Picture like other classic movies like Gone With The Wind, and Casablanca.

  3. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper portray a genuine and realistic relationship!

-Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper are iconic celebrities, but in the film, you forget they are award-winning singers and actors. They completely become Jackson Maine and Ally Campana, two people deeply in love with each other. They flawlessly show both the gritty side of a relationship and the gushy side of it too.

  4. Going along with that, it’s a great date movie!

-I went to see the movie with my boyfriend and not only was it a great date night movie, it even inspired him to try to be as cool as Bradley Cooper. As I was walking away after he dropped me off, he pulled the classic move from the movie, saying “hey” and after I turned around quizzically he said, “ I just wanted to take another look at you”. (Thanks for trying to make me feel like Lady Gaga, babe.)

  5. It has a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes!

-This is a really good rating! To give you context, the rating of A Star is Born is 6% higher than Avengers: Infinity War.

  6. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper sing live in the movie!

-Lady Gaga insisted that all the songs in A Star is Born should be performed live because she hated watching movies where the actors were not lip-synching correctly. This is a cool fun fact about the movie which makes the performances in the film even more impressive.

  7. It is Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut!

-While we might know Bradley Cooper from Silver Linings Playbook and as an Academy Award nominee, his original dream was to be a director before he began acting. It is interesting to see his talent in a different way through this movie.

  8. It has a thoughtful and sincere portrayal of alcohol and drug addiction!

-Bradley Cooper said in order to portray the alcoholic Jackson Maine, he tapped into his painful past. Like the character he portrayed in the film, Cooper has struggled with an addiction to drugs and alcohol. In reference to using his experience for the movie, Cooper said, “Anytime you’re trying to tell the truth you need to go to places and use things that have happened to you….all the dark stuff, you get to use that and that’s really the truth“.

  9. The screenplay was written by Oscar-winner Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper & Will Fetters!

-As if the movie couldn’t get better, the screenplay was written by Will Fetters, Bradley Cooper and none other than Eric Roth, who was a writer for Forrest Gump, another classic movie.

  10. It has inspired a lot of memes!

-Of course, when people are deeply moved by a movie, they cry, tell everyone about it, and sometimes, they even create memes. The majority of them are pretty funny, but in order to fully get them, you’ll definitely need to go see A Star is Born!
