I Tried “Hey! Vina”, The Tinder For Meeting Friends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

Meeting friends in college is hard. Unless you do it the first week of the semester during your freshman year, making new friends is complicated. Collegiates have busy schedules. Work, school, family obligations, relationship obligations, internships, extracurriculars (which help in making friends but can also be a major responsibility), there just doesn’t seem to be enough time in a day to maintain a friendship. But with modern day technology, that is changing.

We’ve all heard of the infamous Tinder. Some of us may be current users. Tinder has made it easy and accessible to talk to potential partners through an app on your phone. It filters out those you don’t want to talk to and those you are interested in. It displays your mutual interests, mutual friends, and shows a few pictures. This concept has been applied not just to romantic relationships but also to friendships, specifically, friendships for women.

Hey! Vina is a new app on the market. The app acts like Tinder in the way that it sorts out potential friendships. When you match with someone, you are able to strike a conversation and see if you are interested in hanging out with each other.

So, looking for new friends, interested in new experiences, and in need for an article topic, I made a profile. I found that Hey! Vina was much more personal than Tinder. Making a Tinder profile was quick and easy since you just connect it to your Facebook and write a short bio. While Hey! Vina incorporates those aspects; it gets much deeper about your personality. There are quizzes that you take to let potential friends know what type of person you really are. These quizzes ask you what time of day you prefer to hang out, what type of environment you like, if you are an introvert or extrovert, etc. I found that theses quizzes were helpful in filtering out my matches. I prefer to meet up for coffee over a drink (because I’m not 21 yet and I’ve never drank alcohol in my life). I prefer to have a plan rather than hang out spontaneously. I prefer to hang out in the evening rather than in the day.

All in all, my experience with Hey! Vina has been positive. The app is still new and has some glitches that it needs to work out but I’m positive that their team will work through that. The concept is what matters. If you’re busy but like to meet new people, give Hey! Vina a try.
