Album Review: Britney Spears’ “Femme Fatale”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

Princess of Pop. The Living Legend. The Radio Mistress. Britney Spears is back in the music scene with her 7th studio album “Femme Fatale.” The dance-pop piece is full of catchy melodies and wild lyrics about sex, love, and having a good time. What will surely be a #1 album this week, its safe to say Britney is back, bitch.

The album starts off with her new single “Till The World Ends.” New pop star Ke$ha helped co-write this bold song for Spears. The song is an instant classic for Spears. She exudes confidence with lyrics like, “I notice that you got it, you notice that I want it, you know that I can take it to the next level, baby.” I was not really feeling the song when first released, but since then I now find myself addicted to it and singing it consistently. My 4 year-old sister also attempts to sing the chorus full of “Oh’s.” The likability of this song is undeniable.

Spears’ first single “Hold It Against Me” is next on the track list and it is clear why it was chosen as such. It’s a great introduction to Spears’ return to music. The next track “Inside Out” is noticeably different than the previous two songs, yet maintains the true Britney vibe. Backed up with an R&B like beat, Spears sings about her liking of break-up sex. Although quite catchy, it is one of the lesser impressive songs on the album.

“I Wanna Go” begins with a strong beat and moves into a fun, electronic beat. With lyrics like, “I-I-I wanna go-o-o all the way-ay-ay, taking out my freak tonight,” one can tell Spears is sexually charged and ready to get action – with someone else or alone. Spears is uncontrollable in the song and makes this dance gem one of the best songs on the album.

“How I Roll” is one of the most unique songs by Spears. The song is about her swagga and need for a man to keep up with her. It is a great song to take a drive to if you commute by car. “Drop Dead Beautiful,” on the other hand, is a great song if you’re going out Friday night. It’s a hip-hop inspired dance track with upcoming rapper Sabi. “Seal It With A Kiss” is a great pop song with an innovative dub step breakdown mid song.

The Black Eyed Peas’ own will.i.am. helps Spears out with “Big Fat Bass.” The song boasts non other than a big fat bass that will explode your stereo. Spears absolutely shines in the next track “Trouble for Me,” a song about avoiding someone at a club who is trouble for her. The song has a sexy beat that will get you pumped.

It is “Trip To Your Heart” that captivated me immediately. The song begins with beautiful synthesizers and moves into a hypnotic beat with an auto-tuned version of Spears voice. The song is reminiscent of a hot, summer night with the one you love. Beautiful lyrics, like “Spread my wings out into the dark, I’ll fly away on a trip to your heart,” make the song an irresistible listen. Hands down the best track off the album.

The next track, “Gasoline,” is about Spears infatuation with a hot guy who offers her supreme gasoline for her needy heart. The final track, “Criminal,” is a very Madonna-esque track about Spears being in love with someone who is totally wrong for her but cant stop being in love with. It is the track that most resembles her older, more safe material. If you purchase the deluxe version of the album, you’ll get more great songs like the sexy “Up N’ Down” or rock-inspired “Don’t Keep Me Waiting.”

Spears returns with a vengeance with “Femme Fatale.” She gives a fair warning to all of the other rising pop starts on the market – Britney is back and will own you in dance-pop music.
