Facts of Life: 20 Things We Wish We Knew

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.
  1. Your short term/long term goals will change and it’s okay, they’re allowed to.

Things change, you change, the things you like and dislike change and the people that you’re surrounded by changes. So with all that change going on it’s a no brainer that your goals will also change. There’s nothing wrong with realizing that you no longer want to fulfill your childhood dream of becoming an Astronaut. The important thing is that you keep trying to figure it out. Your goals changing do not mean it’s the end. It just means you’ve taken a new turn, that’s all.

  1. College really brings out your frugal side

Many collegiettes obtain their first bank accounts during this transition period from high school into college, and it’s when you start seeing all of your money disappearing from your account that you realize just how expensive life can be. With that being said, the sooner you learn about the power of ‘thrifting’ and couponing, the better off you and your bank account will be.

  1. You’re going to ‘love’ a lot of men and many of them will hurt you

If there’s one thing you’ve got a lot to give, it is love. You will love and love and then when you’ve given all you think you can give, you’ll meet that one exception and you’ll love again.

  1. Sometimes you have to be the source of your own inspiration.

The days of being surrounded by people who tell you that you can do it all the time are dwindling. One day you’re going to come to the realization that you’ve got to be the one to keep yourself going.  Whatever it takes (within legal parameters) you has got to become your own inspiration.

  1. You are going to inherit a lot of your mother’s traits…don’t fight it.

She’s raised you. She taught you everything she knows. It’s okay to inherit some of these qualities. After all, they make up the wonderfully imperfect person you have so much love for.

  1. Sometimes you’ll find yourself reflecting on the past, and regretting – don’t

You can’t help it. The “what ifs” and the “maybe if I hadn’t” questions are always popping up in our minds. It’s okay, just remember that there’s nothing you can do now when they do pop up. Don’t spend all your time in the past.

  1. There will be times where you think you’ve hit rock bottom. If you’re still breathing, you haven’t.

At the risk of sounding like a truth commercial: things are going to get bad, and then they’re going to get worse. It’s okay because if you manage wake up the next day, then you’ve already won.

  1. You’re going to do  a lot of things that are ridiculously stupid

This one’s pretty self-explanatory. You’re human and you’re young. You are going some really catastrophic mistakes. You can’t help this one; you just have to accept it.

  1. Loving yourself isn’t as easy as people make it sound

Sometimes it’s so much easier to love other people even if they hurt us that to love yourself. It’s not that you hate yourself, but that you know yourself. You know you much more than any other person. Your faults are no secrets to you, and that makes it much harder to accept and love yourself. However, you just have to get over it. As the old saying goes, “you have to love yourself before anyone else truly can love you.”

  1. You will lose touch with a lot friends

Tyler Perry sad it best in his purple dress and gray wig. “Some people are put into your life for a reason, and others are only there for a season.”

  1. You’re going to think about you first love at least once almost every day

Don’t shun yourself for thinking of your first love, it only means that they meant something to you. We carry a bit of each of our past relationships into our future ones, it’s inevitable.

  1. It’s insanely impossible to look pretty all day, at all times

You’re human, not a model/celebrity who has a team of people following them around all day dedicated to making these people look perfect. Don’t stress yourself out over looks, and join the ranks of normal everyday people.

  1. Your likes and dislikes will change and evolve over time

This one’s a bit similar to number 1. As you evolve your interests will also evolve, again don’t fight it.

  1. Experiencing a death sucks

We hear about death and see it in movies however; NOTHING prepares you for actually dealing with death. It helps to know that it’s just another one of life’s processes which we have no control over.

  1. You’re not going to have it all figured out by (insert # here) years.

Again plans CAN change, so build in some room for adapting if they do.

  1. Some days are filled with highlights, others are filled with lowlights

This one’s pretty self-explanatory.

  1. Finding a job is hard, not giving up on the job search is even harder.

It’s not as easy as all the “ways to get an internship/find a job” articles make it seem. It takes an insane amount of persistence, dedication, and a strong heart; you’re going to be let down plenty of times.

  1. You can’t change the whole world

You just can’t. One person can’t but one person can as Gandhi put it, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” You might not be able to change the whole world, but you can change some individual’s world.

  1. Trust your instincts, there’s nothing more powerful or confirming

When it comes down to it, deep down we tend to always know. Trust yourself and believe in your capabilities.

  1. Don’t be timid when it comes to speaking out for your beliefs

Your voice is one of the most powerful tools you’ve got, so use it! At the end of the day, your peers are going to judge you however they see fit.
