Eat Healthy and Look Great in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

As we take the step from high school to college, the Freshman 15 is something that is ever-present in our minds. How do we say no to the wonderfully unhealthy choices of the campus dining halls? And once we get off the meal plan, how do we avoid those fast food trips we take because we tell ourselves we have no time to cook?

Even though it may be a challenge, take heart ladies: it can be done! Even college girls can look great in a bikini for spring break. For some girls, college is the time when they are in the best shape of their lives–staying in shape is easier than you think! If you follow these simple everyday rules, you will be on your way to a happy and healthy lifestyle…and a rockin’ bod!

  1. Portion control!! Remember that our eyes are always bigger than our stomachs. Start out with small
portions of food, then wait 15 minutes before going back for seconds. Your stomach needs time to catch up with your brain before you can decide if you are really still hungry, so don’t overdo it.
  2. Treat yourself, but in small doses. There is no reason to deprive yourself of your favorite desserts, just make sure it’s only a treat sinze and not a whole meal. Get just one scoop of your fav ice cream, or eat enough M&Ms to fit in to the palm of your hand. You will find that it’s actually enough to satisfy you, and you will be proud of yourself for staying in control!
  3. Walk instead of bussing to class. Every bit of exercise counts. Unless you are going clear across campus, wear walking shoes to class and get some fresh air. You will find that it’s a great time to think about the day, and there’s no harm in getting some tone in those legs!
  4. Take the stairs. Even though those never-ending stairs up to North Campus or to the fifth floor of the journalism building may seem daunting, rise to the challenge. It’s a good way to break a sweat if your exams are keeping you from going to the gym, and you will feel accomplished every time you make it to the top
  5. Find a goal outfit. Pick a swim suit or a dress for a girls’ night out that you want to look great in. Keep it in view so thtat when you are feeling like staying in and watching a movie with a bowl of ice cream on your lap, you can get some motivation and hit the track instead. It’s important to set a goal for yourself without being tied down to a number on a scale.
  6. ALWAYS find time to exercise. The most important thing you can do for your body is find a way to exercise at least three times a week. Gym not your thing? Take a bike ride through the east side of campus or go for a jog and enjoy the spring weather. Pick a workout buddy so you can keep each other motivated to stay on track.

And remember, find ways to make being healthy fun! Whether it’s a kickboxing class or your favorite brand of healthy cereal that you eat every morning, make sure it’s a lifestyle choice and not a chore. Getting in shape really can be exciting!
