Athens, I Love You: The Grit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

On the edge of downtown Athens, a restaurant sits that seems to be always busy. There are tables outside where people sit and enjoy delicious food. What’s so different about this food? Well, there is a lack of meat on the plates. Instead they are filled with fresh vegetables and fruits in large portions. Some people are eating homemade cakes and pies. The staff is always friendly and the food is always delicious. It has quickly become my favorite place to visit for lunch and dinner (and brunch on the weekends).

I haven’t been a vegetarian long, but I have enjoyed going to The Grit since I started attending UGA in 2012. The restaurant has been going strong since the 90’s, even before the thriving businesses that now surround it were there. It used to be in a neighborhood that functioned as a red light district at night, which gives it a sort of charm. The building that it is located in had peeling paint and original hard wood floors that also gives it a rustic feeling.

Music is a highlight of The Grit, and its success can be attributed in part to its connection with the local music scene. Most of the wait staff has some sort of tie to the music scene, and that gives the place an artsy feel. There is also art on the walls and all of it is being sold by local artists for anyone to buy.

Athens, I love you. I love you for giving me awesome places to eat that accommodate my dietary needs and allow me to enter into a more artistic headspace. I love you making me always feel at home, and for giving me places like The Grit to share with visitors and Athenians alike. Nothing makes me feel more at home than fresh, delicious, flavorful food!

Hi, my name is Rachel! I am a 4th year student at the University of Georgia studying English. My goal is to become a Special Education English teacher. I enjoy music, movies, her two cats, and hiking with her boyfriend in the mountains of North Georgia. Currently I work at a local school in their After School program, interacting and tutoring Middle School children. I have a passion for animals and someday hope to open my own animal rescue. My kitties, Calypso and Harley, are my heart and have really helped me develop a passion for helping animals in need.
