15 Breakup Songs That Won’t Make You Feel Sorry for Yourself

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

Whether you just got dumped unexpectedly or you called things off with a complete asshole, listening to sappy love songs is what most will turn to. I’ve experienced the end of a few relationships, none of which I willingly ended, and I always found myself listening to sad songs that made me cry into my pillow.

Crying over a breakup is natural, but at some point the tears need to stop. This playlist may help you realize you’re better off without that significant other. Even if some of these songs are not your style of music, as long as at least one of them has lyrics that make you feel better, you’re one step closer to being yourself again.

1. “Ugly Heart” by G.R.L.

Being confused is okay, questioning things is okay, but knowing you deserve better is what matters. Just because this person was hot stuff, caring about your feelings is important.

2. “Mascara” by Megan Nicole

Taking a stand and realizing what was wrong in the relationship is important. Don’t let that person control you. Crying over a person or situation that you can’t change is a waste of your time, especially if they aren’t doing the same for you. Makeup is expensive, so don’t allow them to make you cry and ruin your beautifully made up face.

3. “I Look So Good Without You” by Jessie James

After a breakup, you automatically may think very negatively about yourself. After some time, you’ll realize that’s all bull***t. You’re so much better without this person ESPECIALLY if they treated you poorly. Every ending has a new beginning and it’s a chance for you to find yourself again.

4. “Potential Breakup Song” by Aly & AJ

This song is the one good thing that came out of Disney Channel. Besides it’s sick beat, the lyrics are a big “f*** you” to whoever hurt you. If the person you were with treated you badly and didn’t appreciate what they had, it’s time to say goodbye. You’re amazing and if they couldn’t see that, they’re missing out.

5. “Fighter” by Christina Aguilera

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right? Don’t let your ex see you upset. Show them that you’re stronger than that. Each breakup will toughen you up until you can fall completely for the right person for you.

6. “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child

This song is a classic breakup song, but for a great reason. You may think you’ll be a mess after a breakup, but it can be very freeing and totally good for you. Just remember your goals and start living for you again.

7. “Beggin’ On Your Knees” by Victorious Cast

This may be a Nickelodeon song, but it still puts your ex in their place. Don’t waste your time on someone who wouldn’t spend their time doing the same for you. One day they will realize what they left behind and they may even try to get back with you. However, by that time you’ll be happier without them (especially if they were a player).

8. “Too Little Too Late” by JoJo

If they tell you they’ve changed since the breakup, they’re probably lying. Once a cheater/liar, always a cheater/liar. If they decide they want you after you’ve already found happiness elsewhere, whether that be with someone else or yourself, they’re too late.

9. “Love Myself” by Hailee Steinfeld

This song may be about masturbation, but the main premise of the song still can work for anyone. You don’t need someone in your life if they hurt you; all you need is yourself because you wouldn’t dare hurt you. Learn to love yourself before you love another person.

10. “Miss Movin’ On” by Fifth Harmony

Once you get to the step of turning off the sad songs, and you’ve stopped crying, then you’re ready to move on. If you aren’t at this step yet, no worries, because you will be.

11. “You’re Such A” by Hailee Steinfeld

If they keep contacting you wanting you back after breaking your heart, don’t buy it. They had their chance, and they wrecked it. Plus if all they want is to be back inside your pants, that’s a definite no-no.

12. “Cry Cry Cry” by Scott Helman

You don’t need them. They wasted your time. Even when the rain is pouring, there comes a time when it stops. You’ll be okay.

13. “Just Keep Breathing” by We The Kings

When things aren’t looking great, just keep trying and keep moving on and you’ll be okay. You’re never alone and things will always get better.

14. “Goodbye” by Who Is Fancy

If you aren’t happy, you have to end things. It will be hard, but you’re better off without the pain they caused you. Don’t let them lie and hurt you. You will find someone who treats you better.

15. “Lush life” by Zara Larsson

You can still do great things without them. Just keep living your life the way you did before you even met them.
