Tips for a Classy Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Movies like “Mean Girls” may like us to believe that on Halloween girls can dress up like sluts and no other girls can say anything about it, but that is not necessarily true. You want your costume to be sexy, not slutty. Here are a few tips on how to keep it classy for Halloween parties.

Wear tights, not fishnets or thigh highs.

Unless you are going as the sexy referee or the sexy Dorothy and using knee length socks, use tights. Don’t be the witch with the ripped stockings; not only does it scream slut, it also screams cheap. You can class up your witch with black patterned tights. Also, remember Halloween is at the end of October, so it will be cold. Not only can you keep yourself warm with the tights, you will end up looking much classier.

Put on tasteful makeup.

Unless it is face paint for a specific costume, don’t pack too much makeup on your face. Going as a sexy nurse does not require pounds of makeup, just add a little more than you normally would for a day look to transition it for night. Make it pretty, nice and natural.

Check your heels.

Make sure you can walk in them and they are not too high. If you are going as a witch, you can wear black boots with your costume. Heels might not be the best choice. And remember a rule that applies to not only your shoes but your costume as well : If you feel uncomfortable, you will look uncomfortable.

Go for one asset.

Don’t try and flaunt everything. If you are going for the exposed midriff, you don’t need a tiny skirt to show off your legs. If you have cleavage exposed, don’t show off your back as well. People won’t know what to focus on.

Be creative.

You don’t have to buy a costume. You can create a cute costume with clothes you already have. Try and come up with cute ideas before going out and buying a costume.

Try for a group thing.

If you are going to a party, maybe join up costumes with friends. You can all wear metallic dresses and go as soda cans or go for a throwback everyone will appreciate and dress as your favorite Spice Girls.

Halloween is supposed to be fun. Have fun with your costume. Obviously you want to look good, but if you’re pulling at your costume all night because it doesn’t cover anything, you will not only look awkward but also have a horrible time.

Remember to rock whatever you decide to wear!
