Thrifty Costumes: Being Creative on Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

As Halloween approaches, many collegiettes are scrambling to find costumes.

Store-bought attire can be relatively expensive, and you also run the chance of having identical costumes at the same party. By putting together your own ensemble, you’ll be able to sport a unique outfit and be as creative as you please!

Here are a few ways to incorporate items you already have — or can cheaply and easily obtain — into your outfit this year.

If you have workout clothes:
Be an Olympic medalist! This is a comfortable and relevant costume. Although you might not have a leotard, if you have athletic pants and a zip-up jacket, you can get four of your friends to dress up with you as the “Fab Five.” The only additional costs include ribbon, cardboard and gold paint to make your medals. You could even get a faux-flower bouquet for an added touch. Who knows — maybe you will run into Ryan Lochte at 101 Cantina for the ultimate photo op!

If you have cowboy boots:
Be a cowgirl! This is one of the easiest costumes to wear, and it is always a crowd-pleaser. All you need to wear are cowboy boots, jeans and a button-up blouse. Then French braid your hair, add a bandana around your neck and you’re set! If you already have a cowboy hat, that would be fantastic, but it’s definitely not necessary to make this costume look cute!

If you have colored denim pants or tights:
Be a mermaid! Get a cheap beige or neutral-colored T-shirt to paint on a shell bra with glitter, and voila – instant mermaid costume!

If you have anything with a tribal print:
Get creative with it! From body paint to over the top jewelry, you can turn one simple item into a fabulous costume. Although it might not be a costume with an official name, it will be sure to turn heads.

These are just a few ideas to inspire you to delve into your closets and see if there is anything worth a second look for Halloween. With a little imagination, almost any article of clothing can be transformed into a great costume.

Good luck, collegiettes!
