Spicing Up Being Single on Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Beyoncé sings, “if you like it then you should have put a ring on it,” and what if that is exactly the mood you find yourself in this Valentine’s Day? Single, ready to mingle and just broken up with your boyfriend, or perhaps still in search for one, on the most touchy-feely day of the year.  Instead of lying in bed with a box of Krispy Kremes and The Notebook playing 20 feet away, play your cards right this Valentine’s Day and leave the couple’s feeling jealous for once.

Secret Cupid
Play a Valentine’s Day version of the popular Christmas game by exchanging gifts with your single girlfriends.  After picking each other’s names from a hat, go out and buy something cute for your secret Valentine. If you don’t know your pick’s favorite gift, choose from a box of chocolates, teddy bears, jewelry or a pallet of nail polishes. Mix it all together in a pink-and-red gift bag, attaching a poem of clues to your identity.

Sweeter than Sweet Potluck
After getting together a group of your single girlfriends, have each one pick a different Valentine-themed dessert to bake (or buy if you are super swamped with school). On Valentine’s night, invite them over and indulge in a variety of different sweets that are bound to leave your heart feeling less lonely. For the cherry on top, watch the complete season of your favorite show or pick from a range of comedies to laugh over with your friends.

Treat Yourself
Though Valentine’s Day can feel lonely, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. Treat yourself to a mani-pedi, or if time permits, a whole day at the spa. The soothing feeling of a massage and the colorful, tidy look of your newly polished nails will leave you feeling relaxed and happier than you have in a long time. This will certainly leave your coupled friends wishing they had a day to themselves.

Date Night with Your Favorite Guy
Even if you are single, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a movie and a dinner on Valentine’s Day with a guy.  Grab your favorite guy friend and pick a movie, non-chick-flick, both of you would love to see. After the movie, enjoy a dinner at your favorite restaurant. For an even better time, go back to one of your homes and make a pizza from scratch. You’ll have such a great time, who knows, the end of the night might leave both of you wanting more.

Cocktail Party
On a Sex and the City theme, throw a cocktail party for your favorite Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte. Buy a book of cocktails and have each of your friends bring a different bottle of alcohol (Vodka, Tequila, Rum) so that each of you can sip on your favorite drink. Finish it off with cheese, crackers and chocolate-covered strawberries.

I am a third-year journalism student at the University of Florida. This is my second year writing for Her Campus.
Hola! My name is Victoria and it is a pleasure to meet you. I was born and raised in Key West, Fla. Surprisingly; people do actually live there. I'm a fourth year journalism student at the University of Florida, and I am obsessed with food. I watch ungodly amounts of the Food Network. I love to dance, write and swim to my hearts content. I don't know what I would do without my Crackberry and listening to the Silversun Pickups makes me sane.
