Sigma Kappa Sorority: A Philanthropic Passion

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Whether it’s sporting orange and blue dresses on gamedays at the Swamp or living by the motto “one way, one heart,” the ladies of the Beta Tau chapter of Sigma Kappa at the University of Florida are some of the most well-rounded collegiate women on this campus.

Even though the sisters of Sigma Kappa at UF are involved in many extracurricular activities ranging from involvement in Florida Blue Key to Student Government, they remain extremely passionate in their philanthropic efforts and always make time to give back to the community.

Sigma Kappa at UF annually hosts Sigma Shootout, a soccer tournament that raises money for the Sigma Kappa Foundation and Alzheimer’s disease research. The philanthropy is held each year in the fall, and this year marks the 3rd annual Sigma Shootout event at UF.

The sisters of Sigma Kappa at UF also participate in the Ultra Violet Campaign throughout the year, which is a new fundraising and awareness event concept developed to provide Sigma Kappa chapters with effective and engaging opportunities to raise funds for Sigma Kappa’s philanthropic priorities. The Sigma Kappa Foundation’s former campaign raised money only for the Foundation’s Alzheimer’s/Gerontology Fund, but Ultra Violet events are designed to raise unrestricted dollars to support the many causes of the Foundation. These causes include: Alzheimer’s/Gerontology, Leadership Development, Scholarships, Sister-to-Sister Disaster Recovery Fund, Educational Area Grants, Maine Sea Coast Mission, and the Alumnae Heart Fund.

The Sigma Kappa sisters also participate in additional service events throughout the year to raise money for their foundation and create awareness for serving others. Over the past year, they’ve participated in road cleanups (Inherit the Earth), clothing and food drives (Maine Sea Coast Mission), and various fundraisers at restaurants, trunk shows, and t-shirt sales to raise money for the Ultra Violet fundraising campaign and the organizations involved in supporting their cause.

As collegiate women, we can all learn something from the Beta Tau chapter of Sigma Kappa at the University of Florida. Making time for philanthropic efforts is a rewarding experience that can enrich your college experience and create lifelong friendships with people you meet through service projects.

The ladies of Sigma Kappa have perfected the act of balancing both the social and academic aspects of college with a passion to serve the community and their foundation.
