How to Recreate the Sock Bun

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

The newest obsession in the beauty world is the sock bun.  Celebs have been rocking this trend for many years now, but just recently word spread about how to get this look at home.  We all have old socks lying around the house (especially the leftover matches the dryer ate), so choose the lucky sock you think will work for your hair-length, and you’re all set to get started.  Below we’ve listed the materials you’ll need, as well as quick how-to steps to create the look!

Materials Needed

  • Sock
  • Scissors
  • Hairbrush
  • Bobby Pins
  • Hairspray
  • Hair Tie

Sock Bun Creation Steps

  1. Lay flat and cut-off a small section of the toe of the sock.
    • For those of you with long hair, find an old tube sock.  If you have short hair, pick an athletic or ankle sock.
  2. Take the sock and roll it into a doughnut shape.  It doesn’t matter which end you start with, just make sure it is rolled tightly.
  3. Brush your hair and put it into a ponytail.
  4. Place the sock doughnut over the tip of your ponytail.
  5. Begin rolling the sock doughnut towards the base of your ponytail, gathering the hair as you go.
    • Take your time during this step; stray pieces may try to escape from the sock doughnut.
  6. Once the sock doughnut has reached the base of your ponytail, secure the sock bun with a hair tie.
    • Your sock bun won’t look perfect yet, so don’t worry!
  7. Fix any fly away or stray pieces with a bobby pin.
  8. Spray your sock bun with hairspray and voila, you’re done!
