Gator Glam: 5 Ways To Wear Velvet Like A Holiday Goddess

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

With the holiday season already in full swing, it’s time to bust out the festive textures and patterns that help to make it the merriest time of the year… well, disregarding the fact that it is also finals season, too! One of my favorite festive textures is velvet. Velvet is a gorgeous, soft fabric to incorporate into your wardrobe this winter, and it is pretty much only wearable this time of the year in Florida due to it being too hot to wear any other season. Here are just some of the many items to think about when incorporating velvet into your winter outfits.

1. Dresses
Dresses made of velvet or decorated with velvet are a fun, ceremonial way to dress for the holiday season. When it becomes cooler in Florida, adding a velvet dress to your wardrobe helps to maintain a chic look without compromising style for comfort or warmth. Think about cozying up to the fireplace with your favorite velvet dress and a cup of hot chocolate, and you will already be prepared to celebrate!

2. Shoes
Walk in luxury this holiday season by accenting your outfit with a pair of velvet or velvet-embellished shoes. You could double up on the velvet by pairing your velvet dress with your velvet shoes, or combine them with a neutral-toned outfit so they really have a chance to stand out.

Tip: Make sure to spray your velvet shoes with some shoe protectant before wearing because although they are beautiful, they can stain easily after contact with oil or dirt.

3. Bags
If you are not ready to completely devote to velvet and splurge on a dress, then owning a velvet handbag is a good way to participate in the trend. Velvet bags are also nice to have when you want to touch something warm and soft in the winter (like a puppy) but unfortunately don’t have one in a close vicinity. Hey, at least it’s better than nothing! Aside from that, velvet bags really do look stylish and plush, and adding one to your closet will give you a luxurious holiday feeling.

4. Necklaces
As with velvet bags, a necklace with velvet accents will help give off a lavish vibe and also keep your neck a little warmer. One popular style of necklace right now is the choker necklace, while another popular style, the bib necklace, uses the velvet fabric as a bottom layer that has lovely stones and gems on top. Either way, integrating a velvet necklace into your holiday outfit will definitely help you stand out to look your seasonal best.

5. Hair Accessories
You can have quite a bit of fun mixing and matching velvet hair accessories into your holiday outfits, even if the rest of your attire doesn’t exactly scream “festive.” Velvet bows and headbands offer a touch of the lush vibe I have talked about without the splurge that may come when purchasing such a historically regal texture. Accessorize a cute velvet dress with a matching colored bow, or pair a comfy oversized sweater with a velvet headband to get in touch even more with the cool winter holiday spirit.

It is no surprise that velvet is definitely a classic texture for the most wonderful time of the year. Even Santa Claus is decked out in head-to-toe red velvet in most of his photos! As always, use these items as a start to helping you search for fashion inspiration involving velvet. Happy holidays, collegiettes!
