6 Unsung Cartoon Heroes of the LGBTQ+ Community

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

There’s no denying that society is changing, especially in regards to the LGBTQ+ community. Nineteen of the 50 states and Washington D.C., now recognize gay marriage as legal. Transgender men and women like Laverne Cox of Orange is the New Black and Isis King of America’s Next Top Model have become role models for youth everywhere. Another unique area where the LGBTQ+ community is receiving support is from cartoons. That’s right: cartoons! Here are some of the most influential unsung LGBTQ+-friendly cartoon heroes:

Oaken of Disney’s Frozen Some of you may have missed the fact that the giant mustachioed man in Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post and Sauna may be gay. Many say this becomes evident when he offers a sauna package to Kristoff and turns to say, “Hello family!” Another large blonde man and four young children can be seen waving back. Meanwhile, Oaken is still portrayed as a strong savvy businessman. Go Oaken!

Gobber the Belch of DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon 2 Gobber is the one-armed, one-legged teacher and mentor of Hiccup. One line in the sequel film may reveal this Viking’s sexual orientation. After observing an argument between Hiccup’s parents, Gobbler whispers, “This is why I never married. This and one other reason.” The film continues on as if nothing shocking was revealed, showing the progressiveness of the series.

Betty and Howard DeVille of Rugrats This couple is better known as the parents of Phil and Lil. I wouldn’t say either parent is gay or lesbian, but their uniquely reversed gender roles are something to be admired by the LGBTQ+ community. Betty is a masculine feminist. She participates in many stereotypical male activities like building things and working out. Meanwhile Howard is arguably more feminine than his wife. He enjoys doing housework, looking after the kids and baking. I believe this couple shines as an example for all.

HIM from The Powerpuff Girls This character is a male villain in the series depicted as a controversial version of Satan. Although a male, he often appears with feminine eyebrows, makeup, high heels and a high-pitched voice. Him is definitely a prominent cross-dressing and possibly transgender character in the cartoon-sphere.

Basically everyone from the Disney film Mulan The characters in this film promote many of the characteristics and ideas of an LGBTQ+ lifestyle. To start off, Mulan dresses as a male impersonating her fake brother. At the end of the film, some of her fellow soldiers dress in drag to distract the Huns. Another notable point is when General Shang had some curious feelings toward Mulan while she was impersonating a male.

Mitch of ParaNorman This children’s zombie movie features a unique character named Mitch. He is a muscular jock who fits into a heterosexual stereotype until the end of the film when a girl asks Mitch on a date to see a movie. He then replies, “You’re gonna love my boyfriend… He’s like a total chick-flick nut.”

I believe characters like these are integral in the movement toward equal rights for LGBTQ+-identifying individuals. By introducing the concept of homosexuality in relaxed, non-controversial ways, it sends the message to children that love is love. Being yourself is what’s most important.
