Among the many professors at UCSD, Leslie Lewis stands out as particularly fantastic. Among other things, her role here at UCSD is a professor of several health courses. She teaches USP 144, a course on health and the environment, and let me tell you, it was one of the most incredible classes I have ever taken. The amazing course and her inspiring nature are among several reasons that Leslie Lewis is this week’s Campus Celebrity.
Leslie Lewis is a doctoral candidate here at UCSD, as well as a former researcher at the Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies at the American University in Cairo. She did ethnographic research and fieldwork in Egypt, as well as other places in the Middle East, Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic. To document her experiences, she has a wonderful blog (www.tribeofgirls.com) reflecting upon her studies in Egypt and the Middle East, as well as a book entitled, “The Cairo Chronicles.” Lewis is fluent in Spanish and has worked with women in Central and South America. She trains these women to sustain themselves by teaching them cleanliness, cooking skills, and other life skills that they would not have known before. She is one of the most powerful women I have ever met and an inspiration to me, as well as many other women across the entire world.
Leslie Lewis not only pursues this amazing field and chartiable work, but also manages to juggle a family and a lively personal life. She is an avid cyclist and commuter, not to mention a very smart and exceedingly educated woman. I highly encourage that, should it fit in your schedule, you look into taking her classes, collegiettes! She is a phenomenal woman that brings her wittiness, fun, humor, and life experiences to the classroom. Her class helped me to form solid opinions on real life situations and policies that I never before thought about or even considered. Incredible would be an understatement when describing her; she is truly an amazing and awe-inspiring individual.
