You Need To Listen To These Upcoming Female Artists

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

Are you tired of skipping every song on your playlist, or just want to hear something different other than the trendy songs on TikTok? Spotify recommendations can only help you so much. Luckily, I’ve done all the research so you can add these new artists to your playlists. Plus, in honor of National Women’s Month, this carefully curated list is exclusively female. Everyone has their own taste in music, so these recommended artists will be compared to current trendy female artists to help you figure out what you might be interested in.

If you like SZA…

Liv.e is an upcoming singer-songwriter from Texas who creates R&B and soul music. Similar to SZA, she has crazy vocal runs and sings about heartbreak and womanhood with a jazzy soulful sound. My current favorite song is “You the One Fish in the Sea” on her 2020 album, Couldn’t Wait To Tell You. I also absolutely love her newest album that was released this year, Girl In The Half Pearl. I wouldn’t be surprised if her music becomes a popular sound on TikTok one day.

If you like Clairo…

Dora Jar is an artist from New York City who creates experimental bedroom pop. She has a soft wispy voice like Clairo, and her songs have a sad-teenager vibe to them. I love how her songs sound familiar, yet they still have a hint of newness. Her songs are perfect for when you’re in your room just chillin’ or making breakfast in the morning. My current favorite Dora Jar song is her single “Bumblebee” which was just released in 2022.

If you like Olivia Rodrigo…

Olivia Rodrigo has a female rage energy that the Hinds replicate perfectly. Hinds is a Spanish rock band from Madrid who are known for their high-energy performances and their ability to capture the female experience. Like Olivia Rodrigo, they’re not afraid to speak about how they feel. Hind’s strong Spanish connection is also reflected in their music, with many of their songs being exclusively in Spanish. One song I love is “Y Cómo” because of the catchy guitar strumming and amazing voice of singer Ana Garcia Perrote. I definitely recommend this band if you’re going through heartbreak or you’re just ready to cut bangs in your bathroom.

If you like Taylor Swift…

Ethel Caine from Tallahassee is not only a model but a talented singer-songwriter. Her indie pop music is inspired by Christian music and Gregorian chants. Similar to Taylor Swift, Ethel Caine draws inspiration from her own personal life and creates super catchy melodies that will be in your head for days. Ethel Caine released her newest album Preacher’s Daughter in 2022, which I find very similar to Taylor Swift’s album, 1989. My favorite song on Ethel’s album has to be “American Teenager” because the sound is super upbeat, but the lyrics are super raw and emotional. Ethel Caine’s music is perfect for night car drives or a wine night with friends.

If you like Lana Del Rey…

Alexandra Savior is an artist from Portland, known for her haunting vocals and songs about heartbreak. Her songs have also been featured in a number of shows including The Handmaid’s Tale. Lana Del Rey and Alexandra Savior both have a vintage, melancholy feel to their music, that evokes a sense of heartbreak and longing. My favorite song of Alexandra is “But You” from her 2020 album, The Archer. It makes me feel like I’m in an old Hollywood movie, crying about my sh*tty ex-boyfriend. Lana Del Rey may be the queen of sadness, but Alexandra Savior is definitely the runner-up.

If you like CharliXCX…

Rina Sawayama is a Japanese and British artist who defies the boundaries of genre and identity. She mixes genres from rock, hyper-pop, R&B, and electronic music. She has also been an important figure for the LGBTQ+ community. Rina Sawayama has a loud, whimsical pop sound, similar to CharliXCX. Both of these artists have also collaborated together recently on the song “Bed For You.” Lately, I’ve been obsessed with Rina’s song “STFU!” on her 2020 album, SAWAYAMA. I discovered this song when my friend played it when we were getting ready to go out one night. Nothing is better than listening to Rina Sawayama while you’re doing your makeup.

Happy listening!
