Gaucho Intern: Skyler Paul

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

Skyler Paul was given the unique opportunity of interning for the UCSB Men’s Soccer Team, a team that has been nationally ranked  for the past 10 consecutive years. She works closely with the assistant coach to help with the recruiting process. Skyler tells us about how she began to intern for the team, what her duties are, and what her future plans are.

Her Campus: How did you get involved with working for the UCSB Men’s Soccer Team?
Skyler: I received an email that all UCSB students receive, which advertised a marketing position for the Men’s Soccer Team. I replied immediately with my resume and interviewed for the position. It was a pretty easy process and I’m really glad that I have this internship.

HC: What does your job entail?
S: The main part of my job is doing data entry for possible recruitments. Currently, I am contacting past soccer alumni so that they can attend alumni weekend and, possibly, play in the alumni game. I work under Coach Greg Wilson and help him out with small tasks that make events and recruitment easier.

HC: What is your favorite aspect of your job?
S: I like that I am able to work around my school schedule. Although, there are some times that I need to go into the office to work on, I can do most of the work from the comfort of my home. Also, there are 5 interns and I enjoy being able to meet new people at UC Santa Barbara.

HC: How can other apply for this position?
S: Make sure to check your UCSB emails regularly and that you have a passion for learning the management side of sports.

HC: Why did you decide to work for he Men’s Soccer team? Do you have a passion for the sport?
S: My boyfriend has played on the team for 4 years and I have attended a majority of the games. Currently, they are on spring season but they do still have friendly games that I plan on attending.

HC: What are your future plans? Does it include marketing?
S: I want to going into buying merchandising. Marketing isn’t really my passion but I think that it is valuable to have internships in college.

HC: Besides your internship, what are your hobbies?
S: I am active in my sorority and enjoy the outdoors. I spend a lot of my time finding new and enjoyable hikes around Santa Barbara. I also like shopping on State Street with my friends and roommates. My family is very important to me. I love going home and watching my little siblings’ football and baseball games.

Rachel is a senior at UC Santa Barbara and studies Communication and Global Peace and Security. Rachel is from a small, beautiful town in southern California called Palos Verdes. However, Palos Verdes is just one of the many places Rachel has lived. Rachel spent her childhood moving and traveling all over the world, living in places such as Indianapolis, Indiana; Santiago, Chile; Vienna, Austria; and Orlando, Florida. Rachel has found her heart and her home in California, choosing to spend her college years in sunny Santa Barbara. However, Rachel continued her wanderlust when she studied abroad in Barcelona, Spain in Fall 2012. At UCSB, Rachel is an immensely dedicated and involved member of her sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma, where she held the positions of Panhellenic Delegate, Inter-Greek Counselor, Rho Gam, and a member of the Nominating Slate. Best Buddies, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is a passion of Rachel's, as she is their Social Media Coordinator as well as an active and proud member. As a member of the Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honors Society, Rachel is able to implement her prowess and affinity for communication and communication-related issues. When Rachel is not writing, participating in Kappa events, or volunteering, you can find her in the gym, on the soccer field, watching Modern Family, or cooking. Rachel's love for sports, food, and writing often times go hand-in-hand, as one may see in her weekly blogs. For the past two summers, Rachel has been freelance writing for the Los Angeles Times, and hopes to continue her career pursuit of journalism after she graduates.
