Elizabeth’s Eats: A Healthier Halloween Dessert

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

Halloween means one thing for the collegiette™ girl’s wardrobe: skimpy costumes.

Cocktails and candy will be consumed throughout this chaotic weekend, but we still have to look our best while playing play dress-up. So how are college girls supposed to enjoy the sweetness of Halloween and look great in the minimal amount of sequined fabric that we call clothing?

Try out this twist on a traditional Halloween treat that puts the “trick” in trick-or-treat!

Dirt and Worms is Halloween classic, and throwback to preschool cooking class. Oreos, pudding, and gummy worms—what could be bad? Well, the calories. The ingredients of this thick and creamy pudding have a high fat and sugar content, but with some healthy alternations, this spooky dessert is not one to shy away from.

  • Make your own pudding! Selecting a sugar-free pudding is the first step in calorie cutting. Although this pudding mix does not contain sugar, it has the same sweet taste that you would experience in a similar, yet sugary product. Stir together your very own fat-free pudding with nonfat milk, let the mixture sit in the refrigerator for a cool 5 minutes, and voila! Now you have fat-free and sugar-free chocolately goodness.
  • The next trick is to use semisweet chocolate chips, rather than Oreos. While this may not follow the traditional recipe, a few chocolate morsels is much healthier than “America’s favorite cookie.” Plus, dark chocolate contains antioxidants so you’ll have some peace-of-mind while enjoying this treat.
  • The last step is to add gummy worms. There is no way to get around eating these delicious and gooey creatures, but your body will still be costume-ready with only a few pieces in each serving.

Enjoy!
