How often do you scroll through Facebook and see pictures of a friend at the Eiffel Tower, another petting a kangaroo in Australia, and others doing amazing things all over the world? Probably at least once a day. It seems as though everyone is studying abroad – as they should! Sure, it might seem a little scary to jump on a plane and fly to the other side of the world, but it will change your life in the best way! Here’s a list of reasons why every collegiette should take the leap and study abroad:

1. Oh, the places you’ll go.

Whether you love big cities, beautiful beaches, or the peaceful countryside, there is a place for you! The world is full of amazing places, now is your chance to go explore and see what is it all about!

2. Gaining and sharing knowledge.

Living in another country is the best way to learn about a new culture. It gives you the opportunity to try new food, possibly learn a different language, and learn the importance of engaging with and respecting different cultures. Plus, it also gives you the chance to teach others about your own culture. You may encounter others who believe stereotypes about the United States, but you can set a great example and prove that we are not all as crazy as some may think.

3. New country, new you.

Not only do you learn about others, you also gain a new perspective of yourself and your home country. You will realize all the things are capable of achieving on your own. Don’t think you can survive being on a plane for 14 hours and living in a country where you possibly don’t know anybody? YES YOU CAN! You are independent, brave, and smart!

4. Your future self will thank you.

Study abroad experience will make you stand out! It shows employers that you are respectful of other cultures, able to overcome challenges, and open-minded. It is also a great way to make connections. Not only will you meet locals, but you can also make friends with other exchange students. You never know when you may want to travel again or work abroad, and now you will have friends all over the world who will be able to help!

5. Once in a lifetime opportunity.

Yes, you can take a summer vacation to Australia or Europe, but it isn’t the same. Most of us will be looking for full-time jobs and places to stay on our own once we graduate, making it difficult to take long periods of time to travel. When else will you be able to live in another country for up to a full year without planning around all of those “adulting” responsibilities? Studying abroad is like taking a long vacation, but still taking care of responsibilities by taking classes that apply towards graduation!

UCSB is beautiful, but it will be here waiting for you when you return! So pick a country, pack your bags, and jump on a plane! I promise you won’t regret it!
