If there is one thing that I wish to be when I grow up, it’s the cool wine aunt. You know, that one family member who just makes every family function a million times better? For some, it may not even be an aunt, but instead a favorite cousin or great uncle. But what’s one thing that all of these people have in common? That’s right: “cool wine aunt energy”. And for those of you who don’t experience the magic of “cool wine aunt energy,” let me tell you about it.

So, what is a “cool wine aunt”? Well, a “cool wine aunt” is usually a child-free aunt who spends her free time traveling the world and sipping on a glass of Merlot. She is calm, cool, and often brings her nieces and nephews gifts from her most recent travel endeavor. She’s also the type to make you feel special, and even better yet, at home. She is the exact opposite of the crazy chaos that goes around within families during the holidays, because she is at peace with who she is and what she contributes. Yes, large shoes to fill indeed, but who wouldn’t wanna be like her? However, anyone (no matter who you are), can manifest “cool wine aunt” energy. So, here are some tips on how you can bring this calming and nostalgic presence into your home this holiday season:

Don’t be pressured to spill all of the details of your personal life when being grilled by your family members. Take a deep breath and only share what you feel comfortable with. Also, if you’re not comfortable with sharing, make it known! Not only is it extremely mature, but it is also insanely important to prioritize your privacy and boundaries with your family.

Try your absolute best to have fun

So, family gatherings may not be your thing. I get it! But hey, you might as well try to make the most of it. Grab a drink, pull your favorite cousin to the side, and have a few laughs. Maybe try to get to know a relative that you barely get a chance to talk to. Who knows? You may have more fun than you think.

be there for your younger relatives

We all know the feeling of being trapped in an awkward conversation with a relative, especially when yo’are only in college and already being asked why you didn’t bring a significant other to the family gathering. And who better to save this conversation than the “cool wine aunt”? Remember to keep an eye on your younger relatives to make sure they’re having a good time. Invite them to have a conversation so they feel both included and at home!

Bad news, you can’t fake the confidence of your “cool wine aunt”. The good news is, you don’t have to. After all, it’s right there in the name, “cool wine aunt”. However, there is no need to go crazy. After all, no one wants to be hungover at a family brunch. But, hey, one glass of wine won’t kill you, and it’s the perfect way to celebrate being done with finals (only if you’re of age, of course)! Additionally, it can help add an extra level of maturity to separate you from your younger siblings and show your family that you have grown to become your own person.

All in all, the spirit of the “cool wine aunt” is really just the spirit of the holidays. Let yourself have fun, unwind, and enjoy the time with your family. Whether you’re twenty-one or sixty-one, it’s never too early or late to be the person that everyone looks forward to seeing during the holidays. So, why not give it a try?
