5 Movies You Can Watch This May For AAPI Heritage Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

Happy May everyone! It’s crazy how time flies, which is why it’s important that you make the most out of everyday life. May is about celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage. It’s about recognizing all of their accomplishments in the world. It’s about learning about their culture, and what better way to do that than by watching some films? Here are five wonderful movies that center Asian American and Pacific Islander characters:

Everything Everywhere All At Once

Personally, I have not watched this movie, but all of my friends that have watched it have told me it’s fantastic. And I believe them, after all, the film had seven wins at the 95th Academy Awards. From what I have heard, this is a bizarre movie in the sense that a lot is happening all at once so be sure to give it your full attention, so you can keep up with the plot.

Disney’s Moana

Last month, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson announced that there will be a live-action Moana! Now we just need to anxiously wait until the movie is released. As of right now, there has been no set date, except that they are working on the film and have a long way to go. So, it’s the perfect time to go refresh your memory and rewatch the original animated version! Moana is a movie about a young girl who sets sail with a demigod to save her family. If there is one thing this movie has taught me, it’s to not give up.

Red Notice

If you are looking for an action-packed movie then look no more! Red Notice is a star-studded film starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds. This film is about an FBI trying to catch the most wanted thief only to end up working together in the end. I enjoyed this movie because it had a different plot twist that kept me on my toes from beginning to end. I definitely recommend it!

Always Be My Maybe

This is your classic romantic movie where two used-to-be close friends meet once again after many years. You already know there will be sparks flying between the two. I appreciate how this film spotlights its Asian American cast in a manner we hardly get to see in Hollywood. The representation is amazing, and the plot is sweet and funny. So, join both friends as they connect once again and explore this newfound spark!

Finding ‘Ohana

This movie is about two siblings who go treasure hunting with their new friends. Not only are they hunting for long-lost treasure, but they end up connecting with their Hawaiian heritage. It’s a nice family-friendly movie that can be found on Netflix. If you need an activity to do while babysitting or visiting young siblings and cousins this month (that you’ll actually enjoy too!), don’t miss out on this fun film!

I hope you all enjoy these movies as well as learn new things. It’s important to support the films that shine a light on the AAPI community so that representation in Hollywood can progress. Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!
