This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

It might be shocking and weird for your parents for you to go off to college. They no longer have control over things like your curfew or whether or not you do your homework. However, it is still so important to nurture a relationship with your parents, no matter how far away they might be. Here are some tips on how to keep a healthy relationship with your parents once you go off to college:

Keep your parents updated about your life.

When you were in high school, your parents probably knew a lot of what was going on in your life because you were around them more often. When you go off to college, it can be hard to always talk to your parents about what is going on, but it is important to. You should talk to them about your new friends and what classes you are taking to keep them informed about your life. Although it can be hard to tell your parents some things, it is sometimes worthwhile to have those difficult conversations.

Call them, but not too often.

You need your own independence, so there should be a balance of how much you talk to your parents and handle things by yourself. It is important to distance yourself and have your own life as well. It might be worth it to actually talk on the phone with them at least a couple times a week to let them know how you are doing, but too much can be intrusive.

Ask for your parents’ opinions on things- but only if you want to know.

Your parents probably have different viewpoints than you do in certain situations. However, when deciding whether to ask your parents’ opinion, It really depends on if you want to ask their advice on something. You are allowed to make your own decisions, but definitely ask for their help or advice if you think the situation pertains to something they would know best.

Make sure to spend quality time with them when you go home or they visit you.

If your parents go to see you or vice versa, then you should make an effort to be with them as much as possible. You are away from them for a majority of the year so it is important to cherish the time you have together as much as possible. Even though it is good to be with your friends, make time to be with your parents when you see them!

Tell your parents how much you appreciate them.

Seeing your kids go off to college can be difficult for parents, so make sure to tell them how much you love them. It is important to be independent, but acknowledging that they were a major part of your growing up process is important.

It is okay to grow up and do your own thing, but never forget some of the people who got you there! Make sure that you always make time to spend with your parents, and always look to find a healthy balance between your independence and your relationship with your parents.
