Why I LOVE Being SHORT

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

When I was younger I used to hate my height. Kids can be so cruel, and of course, I was the few who was teased and picked on because I was the smallest. Now I say to all the “shorties” out there to accept your height. It took me 22 years to be finally be happy in my skin, which means I am so done with pity parties because of my height; instead I’m embracing my “petiteness,” and here’s why…

1.       The Fashion – How awesome is it to be able to shop in three department sizes??? Being a young adult means I get to experiment in fashion choices and it comes in women, juniors, and girls. If I need an item of clothing like a dress, I could first check the women’s department and see what they have, and then just browse over to the juniors, or even cruise towards the girls section. Plus I get to SAVE money! Being a college student means every dime is a saving, so I could save SO MUCH money with this great opportunity. Instead of paying the regular price for a pair of shoes in the women’s department, I could shop HALF the price in the kids! From $60 to $30?! YES that’s a deal! Although, I must say, it can be tricky when I’m shopping for heels, since kids don’t wear 5 inch stilettos, but when I do find THE right one and prop them up with my dress (mini, not maxi), I feel like I’m a soaring 5’4″…

2.  Legs, legs , legs – My legs are my weapon. I don’t have the advantage like taller women who can wear skinny jeans and not have the option to fold the ends up, or wear a maxi dress and still keep the illusion of elegance and height. So my weapon is my legs. It goes back to my first reason, fashion, which means hello I get to show my legs off! Short women’s legs have the advantage to feel free and wear clothes that embrace that. I’m talking about shorts, miniskirts, and mini dresses; I can have a dress that’s short in the front and long in back, wearing different types of shorts, like denim and printed, and mini dresses that look FIRE with 5 inch pumps! Now, I’m not saying to look classless or distasteful. I know when I’m showing off too much skin, so I just make it look fun, cute, and still confident. On top of the fashion reason, it gives me a great excuse to work out and tone my legs! I love leg day (even though it kills me) since I’m able to work my quads, hamstrings, and calf’s and sculpt them into a beast. I am constantly doing calf raises since I am always standing on my tippy toes reaching for an item on the top shelf. So I must say that is a PLUS for us shorties.

3.  Our boyfriends will be taller – Maybe it’s a psychology theory or a hopeless romantic mindset, but I love the thought of having a taller boyfriend, and with my height (a whopping 4’11) I know I always will. It’s “The Notebook” effect: Ryan Gosling picking up Rachel McAdams in the rain and having that passionate kiss. Sure it’s a movie, but they won “Best Kiss” because of that, I don’t think Nicholas Sparks was expecting this, but that’s the advantage of my height. I get to feel the joy of straining my neck back, gazing up at my 6’5″ Drake in a bear hug embrace. Who doesn’t want to live that dream? It reminds me of when I used to see little girls standing on their dad’s feet to dance or hug; the affection on my mind, and the other 5’3″ and under hopefuls, is to have the love of a tall guy wrapping his arms around us and listening to his heart beat.

So, that’s why I love my height! Petite women everywhere are always going to have the advantage of confidence from the endless fashion choices, fierce looking legs, and did I mention that we’re also going to be carded until we’re 30? Yea, it gets better…

Hi my name is Amanda Osorio! I am a Junior at UCF, majoring in Journalism and minoring in Women's Studies! I love to read the True Blood series and eat Pei Wei's spicy Chicken Pad Thai while watching Game of Thrones, Scandal, Empire, Scrubs, American Horror Story and so much more! I call myself a nostalgic person since I should have been raised in the 1970's since I LOVE that era, from the fashion, movies, and music. My dreams will be complete with my purple flower record player and baby blue typewriter. A girl can dream with her eyes open <3 <3
