SGA Days: UCF’s 50th Anniversary

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

“SGA Days” was created by the University of Central Florida Student Government Association to create a stronger bond with students and increase communication efforts. Special events were planned from Feb. 11, 2013 through Feb. 14, 2013 to help give students a better understanding of what SGA representatives do for the student body on a yearly basis.

“SGA works hard so all students can play hard,” said Abu Ngauja, Student Government’s director of communications.

And play hard is exactly what UCF students did Tuesday, Feb. 12 for the celebration of UCF’s 50th anniversary. Students were served special birthday cakes and Knightro made his rounds taking photos with students.

SGA President Cortez Whatley, Vice President Rachel Brill, Chief Justice Dalya Bordman, and members of the Student Development and Enrollment Services team were present to mingle with students and answer any questions they had. Tours of the new Recreation and Wellness Center were also scheduled for students.

The event was held in the heart of the Student Union, making it open to anyone passing by. SGA is keeping their promise to be more engaging by making their presence known and by making themselves more available to the student body.

When I walked into the Student Union, I saw unfamiliar faces and students with confused looks on their face. It was unlike anything SGA has done before and students were taken by surprise to finally be able to put a face to the names they’d seen on ballots the year before. As the second largest University in the nation, it is amazing that our Student Government is making such an effort to serve the student body in such an intimate and engaging way.

There was a line stretching from the information desk past Subway, ending in a point I couldn’t quite determine. All of these students were patiently waiting to get a custom GIF made with their friends, some props and a green screen. This was probably the most popular station at the event. UCF’s SGA is stepping up their game this year and making their presence known.
