An Open Letter to My Friends Whose Parents Pay for College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

No, I’m not bitter or jealous. I just want a mutual understanding that I just can’t go out and spend money on overpriced fancy Boba drinks every day. Although I would love to join you all for Starbucks every day before class, I think I will stick to my Keurig instead. I love my parents and appreciate all of the support they have given me throughout the years. Unfortunately, college is expensive and sometimes ramen over Chipotle is a sacrifice that has to be made.

When I can’t partake in your Friday night adventures because I have to go to work, please don’t convince me to call off. After all, these overpriced textbooks that we took advantage of in high school won’t just be getting dropped off onto my desk anymore. I can always join you when I get off.

Sometimes I am just too exhausted after waking up at 8 a.m. for my classes and then going to work right after for another 8 hours. I’m really sorry I can’t see you as much as I would like.

I AM NOT A HUMAN TAXI SERVICE. Uber is a wonderful service and have you seen all of the free uber codes going around? Gas is not cheap so please do not have me driving aimlessly around until my tank is empty. On the other hand, do not ask me for gas money when your parents are the ones giving you money for your car.

I love you all. Please just understand that I am on a budget and that I have to stick to it. Staying home some nights to binge watch Netflix and fetus One Direction videos is fine with me. I just enjoy your company.

Nicole is a sophomore at UCF studying Entertainment Management (her Hogwarts letter unfortunately never arrived). When she is not at Chick-fil-a or Chipotle, you can find her gossiping to her friends about all of the latest celeb drama. This concert enthusiast can also be found in the very front of every concert, because front row is the only way to go. Her favorite color is Niall Horan's eyes and her worst fear is Harry Styles cutting his hair (update: the lucious locks have been cut and Nicole is currently in hiding). Her secret husband Justin Bieber would describe her as a fun, cat loving soul, who loves adventure a little too much.
Maddie is a senior Marketing major at UCF. When she's not writing for Her Campus or her personal blog, you can find her hanging out at Fashion Club or in OSI working on the Mr. and Miss UCF shows. Despite popular belief, Maddie isn't actually the tallest girl in the world. If you're wondering where you've seen her before, it was most likely at a #UCFBusiness event. Maddie enjoys loud pop music, scented candles, and any food with sprinkles on top. She often discusses the SNL cast as if it is a sports team, and likes to pretend that this is endearing.
