Fashion Trends Over The Decades That Are Still In Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

1920’s Drop Waist Dress

This style of dress truly defined the decade for women’s fashion. It’s cute, flirty, and flattering. Also, women who wore these were total rebels as this dress rejected the female social norms. This is because it did not require a corset and had a higher hemline.

Pair this flowy dress with a strappy heel and get ready for a night of dancing.

1930’s Bold Red Lip

An outfit in the 30’s wouldn’t be complete without red lipstick. I mean seriously, how much more classic can it get? With all of the wonderfully diverse lipstick colors available today such as plum, coral, and even black, don’t forget that classic wine red when date night rolls around.

One of my most favorite actresses, Greta Garbo, absolutely rocking the red lips.

1940’s Knee Length Skirt

If you’re going on a job interview, channel your inner 40’s with a chick and throw on a bold knee length skirt. It’s classy and easy to modernize.

Pair the skirt with a trendy blazer and you’re a shoo-in for the job.

1950’s Chanel Purse

In February of 1955, the first Chanel flap bag named 2.55 was launched. Believe it or not, the madmaouselle lock is the original lock that Coco her self designed, while the CC lock was designed later in the 80’s be Karl Lagerfeld (my personal idol). This purse is a true classic.

I’ve wanted a Chanel purse since I was about 9 years old, but I’ll just keep dreaming for now.

1960’s Oversized Sunglasses

Who doesn’t love a pair of funky sunglasses? I know personally, I own every type of sunnies from bright yellow Dior shades, to floral aviators, to giant round John Lennons.

How hip are these 60’s babes?!

1970’s Platform Shoes

I am especially referring to those platforms made from wood. I own this pair from Jeffrey Campbell and let me tell you they are my all time favorite shoe. There’s no doubt these make a statement, but isnt that what style is all about?

How groovy are these?! Hippie it out with some bell bottoms and a peace sign.

1980’s Fanny Packs

Okay I know what you’re thinking- fanny packs are only for 40 year old dads wearing Hawaiian shirts while visiting disney land. But this is so not true! I have a mint green fanny pack with studs and woah is it convenient.

When every one thinks of the 80’s they think of neon tights, leotards, and leg warmers, but we can’t forget this accessory to complete the outfit.

1990’s Doc Martens

Ah! Another shoe trend I absolutely adore. Doc Martens can often come off a little intense for some, but seriously they’re wonderful. I own a pair of black patent leather Docs and they’re the best.

Pair these with ripped shorts and a flannel to complete the look.

2000’s Crop Top

Okay the 2000’s were not just Abercrombie & Fitch jean skirts and polos. There are a couple of cute trends that are still wearable from 2003, including the cropped halter top.

Ugh, Brittney will always be my idol.

Remember: “Fashion has always been a repetition of ideas… but what makes it new is the way you put it together.”
