Celebrating Valentine’s Day In a Long Distance Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

Long distance relationships can have limitations and unfortunately, one of those is not being able to celebrate the cutest holiday of the year, Valentine’s Day.

I have been in a long distance relationship since I was in high school, and have only been able to celebrate Valentine’s day with my boyfriend when I was in high school. Unfortunately, it was a school day, and I saw girls with their giant teddy bears and balloons but he knows my taste and had brought me Starbucks to school that day.

Since we have been in college we have not really celebrated valentine’s day since it has fallen on a weekday every year and we only get to see each other every other weekend. Not being able to celebrate valentine’s day without your loved one by your side can make you feel like its forever alone day all over again, but fear not here are my tips to celebrating Valentine’s day in a long distance relationship.

1.Send a Care Package

My boyfriend and I have always sent each other Valentine’s day care packages since we have been in a long-distance relationship. We both unintentionally get each other stuff from Target. Personally, I think Target is one of the best places to shop for a care package. They have a ton of one dollar Valentine’s Day candy, and cute valentine’s day knick knacks, and you can throw in something else they might like for school like a gift card, movie or a book. I would avoid getting actual gifts because if they are heavy it could cost you a lot more money to ship. It’s super easy to put together and I found it really fun.

2. Have a Facetime date

I am not one to Facetime a lot since I am always on the go and busy at school but I do set aside time at least once a week to Facetime and talk on the phone every day. For Valentine’s Day you can get yourself all dolled up and facetime each other and just talk for a really long time. You could even make it a dinner date!

3. Celebrate later

I honestly think I like not being able to celebrate Valentine’s day because I do not want to deal with the crowds around that time. My boyfriend and I have always had a post-Valentine’s day celebration where we go on an above average romantic date somewhere and do not have to deal with so many people being in the places we want to go, so it makes our date much more intimate and more special. Here is also the time you could exchange actual gifts if you wanted to!

4. Surprise them

If your schedule is free you could go up to see them even if it is only for a few hours. My boyfriend only lives two hours away, but if they live much farther you could maybe arrange some time off for a trip. You could also send something to them like flowers or food to be delivered to their home. The element of surprise is super romantic and will make your valentine’s day extra special.

Hope you enjoy these ideas and have an amazing day with your loved one!
