Staples for Your Closet, All Year Round

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

Having a well-curated closet is a powerful thing. I’m no celebrity stylist, but I still take time to make sure my outfits are put together every day. When you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good, you do good. So here are five staple pieces in my closet that I recommend if you feel like upping your outfit game.

Fun Earrings

Earrings are like the cherry on top of an ice cream sundae — they’re small, but they can make all the difference in the look of the final product. If you’re into a more subtle or delicate look, then threader earrings are perfect for you. They’re dainty and come in a lot of simple styles. If you’re more daring, then you can go with something larger with a flashier design.

Plaid Skirts

All hail plaid skirts! I sincerely believe these will never go out of fashion. They’re super cute and can be styled in so many different ways. Pull on a sweater and some booties if you want to dress it up a bit, or throw on a T-shirt and sneakers for a more casual look. Hell, channel your inner Cher Horowitz and get a matching blazer. There are hundreds of plaid patterns and colors available so it’s super easy to find one to your liking. The possibilities are endless.

Altered Jeans

For those of you who don’t like to wear skirts, you are valid and I have another option just for you: altered jeans. What I call “altered jeans” are any jeans that have a special design that deviates from the standard — two-tone jeans, embroidered jeans, jeans frayed or specially hemmed at the bottom, jeans that lace up on the sides, and other similar styles. I’m a big fan of altered jeans because I don’t see many people with them, so whenever I wear a pair I feel like I’ve got a really unique piece of clothing on.

Platform Shoes

If you’re on the shorter side like me, then let it be known that platform shoes are life-changing. They’re like socially acceptable stilts! Now that I’ve gone down this path there is no going back. I have platform sandals, boots, and even Converse (bless Converse for making these a thing). Platform sandals and boots, in particular, are super versatile because they can be dressed up or down. Wear them with a dress and you have a date outfit, or pair them with jeans and a cute top for something more laid-back.

A Dependable Lippy

Okay, this isn’t actually an article of clothing, but it’s important nonetheless. If you’re like me, then your lips don’t give a damn about the weather and will be chapped all year round, so it’s important to have chapstick on you at all times. Swiping some color on your lips can also give the impression that you’ve done your makeup even if you haven’t. Just make sure the color isn’t too crazy or it can look out of place. Try to find one that’s a bit more neutral and matches your skin tone.
