How to Make 2019 Your Year

With 2019 just beginning, everyone starts saying “I’m going to make this New Year my b*tch” by making New Year resolutions. Resolutions are good ways to set goals and have a positive mindset when moving into the new year. They allow us to reflect on the past year and figure out ways to improve our lives based on previous mistakes. But, in actuality, how many people actually follow through with their resolutions? There are several reasons why it can be hard to end up following thorough with resolutions.

When making resolutions, it’s important to make sure that they are actually achievable and attainable.  Sometimes following through with New Years resolutions can be hard because many individuals aren’t used to big changes in their lives. According to June Kloubec, "Unless you are very motivated, have good social support, and have the right environment, it is difficult to make lasting behavior changes."

If you want to set yourself up to make 2019 your year, here are some tips for making better resolutions that you can actually follow through with.

1. Be specific

When making your resolutions be specific for when you want to complete a certain goal and how you want to achieve it. The more detailed your goal, the easier it will be to actually follow it.

2. Write down your goals

It’s important to have a written record of your goals so that you can constantly check it to see if you’re achieving them. Writing down your goals also holds you accountable for sticking to them.

3. Write your goals in places other than a notebook

If you’re like me and write down goals in a notebook and then forget about them, start writing down your goals in places like the refrigerator, your car, or a white board. Seeing your goals around you will help keep you on track.

4. Check in with yourself

Check in on your goals and your progress every few months or so to see what goals you’ve completed or which ones you’re close to completing. If you find that a goal needs a little tweaking, don’t be afraid to make adjustment based on where you are in the year.

5. Believe in yourself

Be proud of yourself for realizing areas in your life that need improvement or change. Believe that you can accomplish the goals you’ve set for yourself because a positive mindset is important for success.
