Chocolates for Mother’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

Moms love chocolate. They love the sweet surrender of bliss and euphoria, and console themselves about eating these guilty pleasures by telling themselves that it’s good for their soul. It’s also always a plus knowing they were sent with love from one of their greatest accomplishments in life: you. This is why celebrating our mothers with a box of chocolates on Mother’s Day is a trend that never fails.

Whether you plan on going home on Mother’s Day weekend, or are stuck in Davis due to upcoming midterms, or can’t afford that plane ticket, here are some options we have to help simplify your search for the perfect box of chocolates to brighten her day and express your love.

A little bit of everything
Not really sure what kind of chocolate your mom enjoys? These name brands offer an assortment of rich chocolatey deliciousness all at a reasonable price and can be shipped directly to Mom when bought online.

If she loves dark chocolates, See’s Candies’ 1 lb. box of dark chocolates contains a variety of flavors that range from dark chocolate creaminess to chocolates with almonds and raspberry cream.

Online, Ghirardelli also offers deluxe boxed chocolates with an assortment of flavors. Their Masterpiece Collection has everything from dark truffles to rich chocolates with creamy fruity fillings, and is sure to contain something that will hit that chocolate indulging spot.

For the Belgian Chocolate lovers
If you’ve been lucky enough to have a friend go to Belgium and bring you back Belgian chocolates, you can understand why people say the best chocolate of all is Belgian chocolate. Splurge and try Godiva’s 36 piece Spring Chocolate Gift Box, which includes an assortment of Belgian dark, milk, and white chocolates in an adorable embellished box, all for $50.

Thinking quality over quantity? Try Godiva’s 4 piece Gold Favors, with a dark chocolate, chocolate praline heart, dark chocolate caramel embrace, and a white chocolate raspberry star, packaged in a gold box and your choice of a gold, lilac, red, white, or pink ribbon.

Going a little more gourmet
Gourmet chocolates are amazing, so it’s understandable that these 36 piece box of chocolates are much more expensive than the $25 boxes available at See’s. Fortunately, with gourmet chocolates, the rich quality and texture of each piece in just a 4 piece box is usually enough to satisfy your mother’s chocolate cravings.

Recchiuti Confections is an Italian chocolate shop in San Francisco known for the exquisite etchings on its chocolates. The Recchiuti Sampler contains 4 pieces of delectable assortments for $11. Can’t make it to SF? Good news, Recchiuti Confections also has an online store for you to visit.

Stationed in New Hampshire, L.A. Burdick’s Handmade Chocolates has gained national prestige for its products, which contain imported chocolates from Switzerland, France, and Venezuela! For Mother’s Day, give your mom one of their Wood Box Assortments, which range from 10 pieces for $14, to 64 pieces for $64, and are packaged in — you guessed it — a beautiful little wooden box. Not around NH? This chocolatier’s products can be bought online as well.

Around Davis
The Candy House of Davis is known for its beautiful variety of chocolate creations, in particular, its truffles and molded fudge. This chocolatier is also well loved for its impeccable service, with its free samples and a very friendly owner known to hand out free extra truffles every now and then.

Don’t forget — the Co-op and Farmer’s Markets are where the most unique samples of chocolate can be found. It’s where you find rare gems like Joy and Taylor’s raw chocolates, raw referring to the chocolate’s organic and vegan qualities, and Yummy Dummy’s dark chocolates, which contain fresh, all natural, and local ingredients.

Finally, if you’re willing to venture slightly out of Davis, check out Ginger Elizabeth’s in Downtown Sacramento. Containing the all-natural products your mother deserves, Ginger Elizabeth’s boasts 20 different chocolate flavors, all made from scratch. For Mother’s Day, consider buying your mom a box of Dark Chocolate Almond Rocher or Palet D’Or Chocolate Ganache.
