Transitioning from Summer to Fall – Fall Fashion Essentials!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

The time has finally come. Fall is upon us! You know what that means. Put away those day to day tank tops and booty shorts. Do away with your flip-flops and thong sandals. It’s time to get serious. Bust out the layers!

I personally love the chilly seasons to bits. Not only are the holidays right around the corner, everyone’s dressed so adorably too! I mean, how can you not be? Chilly weather gives you every opportunity to show off your sense of style. Here are a few fall wardrobe essentials I’ve put together for all the interested fashionistas out there! Enjoy!

1. Chunky Cable Knit Sweaters

When it comes to chilly weather, you chunky sweaters are a must have. I mean who doesn’t love this look? It’s cute. It’s simple. It’s casual. And it’s perfect for the holidays! Wear it with a dress or with a skirt, with jeans, or with tights. The combinations are endless.

2. Denim Jackets

Perfect outerwear for any casual school day outfit when it’s chilly out! Denim jackets are kind of like blank canvases in my mind. Accessorize these jackets with scarves, hats, beanies, and more! These jackets are great for light layering during the summer to fall transitioning.

3. Parkas

These casual coats are breezy and light enough to wear during fall’s warmer days, yet thick enough to keep you warm when it get’s chilly out too. The perfect long coat if you’re not ready to go all out with the thick wool pea coats you’ll be seeing more in the winter!

4. Ankle Booties

Looking for the perfect shoes for fall? You can’t go wrong with ankle booties! They’re perfect for that transition between summer’s mid 90s to Fall’s chilly 60s and 70s. Ankle booties come in so many styles; you’re bound to find a pair that’ll satisfy all your shoe-loving needs.

5. Over the knee socks

Part 1 of “How to turn your summer outfit into a fall outfit”! Add knee high or thigh high socks! Look warm and cozy while still wearing some of your favorite summer bottoms you’re not quite ready to let go of yet.

6. Infinity Scarves

With Part 1 of “How to turn your summer outfit into a fall outfit” above, I present you with Part 2: scarves. Scarves are timeless accessories used throughout the year’s seasons and fall is no exception! Layer up and give your outfit that extra pop with a cute scarf.

7. Skater Skirts

Always have a few pretty skater skirts lying around! The thing I love most about skater skirts is how versatile they are. You could dress ’em up with heels and a blazer, or take a more casual approach with tights, boots, and a knit cardigan or parka. And the best part about skater skirts? They’re stylish all year round!

8. Chiffon Button Up Blouses

These pretty, soft blouses are great to have all year round. Dress up a chiffon blouse with a skirt or dress it down with a pair of faded boyfriend jeans. You can take a more professional approach with these blouses are just lean towards a more comfortable look.

9. Kimono Cardigan

As chilly as Fall gets here in SoCal, bear in mind we’re still in Riverside. Which means some afternoons can still get pretty warm! Cover up with a light kimono cardigan draped over!

10. Canvas Backpack

Last but not least, a canvas backpack! A huge part of fall for students is going back to school. With that being said, back to school shopping is a must and what better way to show up to your first lecture than with an adorable, stylish canvas backpack?
