Do or Don’t: Leggings as Pants?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

Leggings may be called a lot of different names like tights, spandex, or as my guy friends call them,“le-pants”, but one thing is definite: they are fashionable, especially in college. They’re comfy, warm, and look more polished than wearing pajamas to class. They are definitely easier to put on than a pair of jeans for that 8 a.m. or even that 11 a.m class.

Many people use leggings as a substitute for pants. As said, they definitely have their comfort and fashion factors, but there are some problems that come with them. Since leggings are stretchier and thinner than regular denim, they tend to be more see-through and tend to cling and show areas that one might not be aware of. More often than not, leggings reveals more than you want to so there are some precautions that ladies must follow to avoid these problems.

Here are some tips and tricks for wearing leggings on campus:

  • If you’re going to wear leggings, be sure that they’re thick and opaque enough. Sheer (or even semi-sheer) leggings are basis of the problems above. If you’re having trouble finding some thicker leggings, you can also layer two pairs to get a little bit more coverage.
  • Layer, layer, layer. Make sure that whatever you wear on top covers your butt, like a long shirtdress, a tunic, or an oversized cardigan. No one should be able to see your butt or crotch.
  • Most importantly, do not wear them with crop tops!
  • Make leggings look even more polished by pairing them with some boots or oxfords. I know that Uggs are comfy and warm just like leggings. I think a lot of ladies who wear leggings do so because they are sleeker and tighter versions of pajamas (myself included). They are just generally better looking than wearing pajamas to class. In doing so, please just add the extra step of wearing them with some non-Ugg boots, whether it be leather, suede, ankle or knee high. You’ll just look more put-together which is always a good thing when you’re walking around campus.

Leggings as pants can be possible. I’ve slowly become a firm believer in wearing leggings to school.  As a matter of fact, I’m wearing them, paired with a long shirtdress, as I type this article. It was probably the best thing to wear for the ungodly 8 a.m. Math final I had this morning. Everyone has their own style and leggings definitely can be used as a foundation for everyone’s fashion choices due to their versatility, so have fun with your choices!
