Confessions of a Jean-aholic

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

It’s 8 AM on a Monday morning. I hit snooze on my alarm for the last time and crawl out of bed. Analyze my lions mane in the mirror, turn on my straightener and go to brush my teeth. This all happens very slowly with some 90s sitcom rerun playing in the background. Now for the true challenge, what the heck am I supposed to wear for a morning discussion in a town with bipolar weather?

Jeans! Jeans go with absolutely everything. Pair them with a hoodie on a cold morning or with a cute blouse on a warm spring day. Everyone owns a pair of jeans and mostly everyone has a pair laying on the floor. Personally, I own 11 pairs. (This is not a dramatization.) I am the proud owner of 11 pairs of jeans, all skinny. Every hue and pocket detail you can imagine, I have. Which is strange because I didn’t own a pair of jeans in this basic closet staple until I was twelve years old. Maybe my addiction to skinny jeans comes from an internal need to make up for those twelve lost years.

While I would say that I’d rather wear shorts, a skirt, or dress any day of the week for some reason I often go for pants when getting dressed in the morning. Before I began writing for Her Campus UC Riverside, I read a lot of fashion blogs and magazines, all who often write about how this jean craze is specific to Americans. You are probably wondering by now, where is she going with this, I get it, she owns a lot of jeans. One second, I’m getting there!

I don’t often makes New Year’s Resolutions, but after everything that happened in 2011 I decided 2012 was going to be my best year (yet). I made a few resolutions, one being completing a style challenge. Style challenges vary from very difficult (i.e. only wearing six items of your wardrobe for an entire month) to more simple, like trying to take a style risk once a week. With this newfound awareness of my strange addiction to skinny jeans, I’ve decided that I will be taking part in the 30 Days Pant Free Challenge. It was originally intended to only include jeans, but I decided to up the ante and exclude wearing pants altogether. With the beautiful weather taking over Southern California it shouldn’t be too difficult…right?

I was born and raised in Northern California, where you can always count on morning fog to frizz up your hair and the temperature to never go over 72 degrees. Yet somehow during my years in high school, I gained the reputation of being that weirdo who wore shorts and skirts in 50 degree weather. If I could pull it off then then I can definitely pull it off now! So wish me luck Highlanders, for May will be the leggiest month this year. And if you’re brave enough, join me in locking away our jeans and pulling out all those fabulous summer clothes that have been gathering dust all winter!!

She decided to double major because at the time it seemed like she was getting two degrees for the price of one, the ultimate sale! She writes about relationships, how to spend a Friday night at home, being a confused twenty-something and never having enough money in her bank account. Her column 'Midweek Study Break' is published every Wednesday but you can read more of her work in her new project, When Life Gives You Rubi. Until Disney decides to make a movie about how hard it is to be a recent (single) college graduate, we can try to figure out this whole being a grown up thing together.
