It’s All In the Details: Studs for Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Irvine chapter.

As we inch closer and closer to spring, we take a hint from nature and trade our heavy, dark clothing in favor of light pastels and floral prints.  Here in Irvine, where the weather seems to change based on a coin toss, it’s never too early to begin preparing for the change of seasons.  And for those of us clinging to our winter trends in protest, fearful of letting go, don’t worry!  You can easily incorporate elements reminiscent of those cold winter nights into an entirely new look that’s perfect for the warm spring days approaching.
My favorite trend this winter was studded detailing.  I loved adding extra edge to my outfits by pairing studded accents with black jeans and combat boots.  Now that we’re transitioning into spring, I decided to use my studded accessories to add contrast to this season’s traditionally sweet, girly style.

Look 1: Blooming Pastels
Studded Detail: Envelope Clutch

This first look is really comfortable and casual, perfect for everyday activities like going to class, running errands, or even enjoying the sunshine with a walk through Aldrich Park.  I channeled the budding spring flowers and selected a green and blush pink palette.  My accessories are minimal: I’m wearing my favorite watch and two (barely visible) rings. The ballet flats serve to tie in the blush of the studded envelope clutch, worn with a chain for a more casual feel, and to offset the two different shades of mint, incorporating edgy studs with simple, spring-inspired colors.

Look 2: A Floral Finish

Studded Detail: Collar

This second look is just one step up from the first in terms of dressiness.  It’s still perfectly acceptable to wear to class, but replacing denim shorts with a patterned skirt makes this outfit also perfect for a daytime outing, like a lunch date or shopping trip.  Again, I’ve chosen a sheer, sleeveless chiffon top, but this time, the studded detailing is in the collar, adding some visual interest to an otherwise plain white shirt.  The studs contrast the colorful, floral skirt, and the outfit is finished with some neutral touches, namely my flats and bow headband, to keep it from having too much going on at once.

Look 3: Mixed Metals
Studded Detail: Leather Flats

The third look I’ve assembled is definitely the most elegant of the three. This last combination is geared more towards a party or a night out, as opposed to the daytime feel of the previous two.  I selected a vibrant mint dress with a very simple silhouette and some small structural details in the pockets.  As a tall girl who doesn’t always love to wear heels, I opted instead for this pair of black leather flats, bedecked at the toes and heels with gold studs of various sizes.  I bridged the gap between the silver zippers on my dress and the gold accents on my shoes with a layered necklace of gold, silver, pearls, and black ribbon, and a gold ring with a mint stone.  The color and cut of the dress are perfect for a warm spring evening, but can also be paired with a long black cardigan in case of chillier weather.
