Top 10 Best Movies to Watch With the Girls

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

You’ve been here before: It’s a Friday night, you and your friends all decided that no, dancing in a sweaty, gross frat house is not how you’d like to head into the weekend, you’ve got the rosé cracked open, face masks on, and you innocently dive into the abyss of endless movie options. “This’ll be easy, right?” you say – but it is not, in fact, easy – and you don’t even know where to start. Well, worry no more. Whether you’re with a group, your sisters, or just your Mom (we love that), these movies will keep you laughing and feeling girly as heck.

1) When Harry Met Sally: Ah, the nostalgia. This movie came out in 1989 (yes, exactly one Taylor Swift ago) and it’s arguably one of the cutest love stories of all time. Extra points if you watch it around New Years or Christmastime.

2) Clueless: I’m sorry, but how could you not love this film. The fashion, the drama, the weird creepy gender dynamics of the 90’s. Once you finish this movie, you’ll be feeling more grateful than ever that you got through high school (thank goddess!)

3) Superstar: This is for you quirky girls out there. This movie will leave you laughing until your belly hurts, and feeling empowered to take on the world. Extra points if everyone learns the choreography from the dance number.

4) Legally Blonde: If you ever think you’re extra, just know that Elle Woods literally got into Harvard law school to get back at an ex. This movie will make you laugh, cry, bend, and snap.

5) Mean Girls: A classic. This is another movie that will make you thank heavens that you’re not in high school anymore. It’s hilarious, heartbreaking, and so quotable it hurts.

6) Bridesmaids: This movie has an all-star cast of female comedians who will make you laugh from the first scene to the last. A story of friendship and unbreakable sisterhood, this is a must watch.

7) La La Land: Okay: aside from an excuse see Ryan Gosling, this movie is worth it. It’s beautiful – dare I say downright artistic – and, of course, it’ll make you catch all the feels. I would say watch this if your audience is feeling emo. Extra points if you cry at the end.

8) 13 Going on 30: This movie is so cuuute. It’s definitely a feel-good, girly-hours movie. You’ll love it, I promise. Extra points if you reminisce on your past-self’s teenage aspirations after the film.

9) Crazy, Stupid, Love: Again, Ryan Gosling is in it – so that’s a given. But also Steve Carrell, and Emma Stone; they’re all very authentic, hilarious, and talented story-tellers. Love is messy, and this movie shows we all have a lot in common when it comes to how we handle it.

10) Love Actually: This movie will make your heart feel warm inside. It’s another movie about the complex, twisty-turny parts of love that hurt, heal, and make us human. It’ll leave you laughing, and maybe you’ll even shed a few tears.
