On March 8, people all over the world will be celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD), a day commemorating women’s social, political, economical, and cultural achievements. Not only is this a day of celebration, but also a call to advocate and raise awareness of women’s rights and gender equality. The day can serve as a reminder of how far we’ve come in the fight for equality and how far we still have to go. Starting in 1911, IWD continues to be honored in diverse ways. Cities, near and far, will often host special events on this day or even all throughout March.
Just a quick ride away from Berkeley is the city of San Francisco. On March 4, San Francisco organized an early celebration of IWD by giving away 80,000 tulips in Union Square. This event drew in hundreds of people and lines that lasted hours long. Each participant got to pick out a bouquet filled with colorful tulips of their choice and a sticker prompting everyone to save the date for March 8.
Many businesses and organizations often hold events to celebrate International Women’s Day. These events are important to the cause as they are all about supporting and uplifting women in the community. Together this helps create inclusive places where people feel welcomed and safe.
Little by little, IWD takes steps to call attention to many issues that women still face, such as gender discrimination, sexual abuse, gender-based violence, and limitations on reproductive rights, etc. There are many ways for you to participate in local events and get involved! Some ideas may include supporting female-led businesses, educating yourself and others on IWD and the challenges women face today, donating to different charities or causes, continuing to uplift the women around you and treating everyone with respect! Be sure to keep an eye out for local events coming your way and to look on the International Women’s Day website to find more events near you!
